What I liked

Company, People, Experience. I was able to get alot of great experience that i needed that wasn't offered at School. Specifically Auto CAD Civil 3D.

What I wish was different

No Complaints!

Advice

Strech yourself, have confidence in your abilities. The programs offered at BYU-Idaho are competitive with ANY other university.

What I liked

I loved how young and similar my coworkers were, everyone got along and everyone was extremely helpful whenever I needed it. The experience I got was amazing and I learned a huge variety of skills in engineering.

What I wish was different

Wish I had a more consistent workload, you charge your time to specific jobs and when you don’t have work it was sometimes hard to find things to do.

Advice

Don’t expect to have much time Monday through Thursday out of work, but don’t be discouraged by this, the skills you gain and pay you earn is well worth the intense schedule.

What I liked

The company culture and the people at my office location were amazing. Everyone was always so open to lending a helping hand if I had a question or needed help on anything. My supervisor was invested in my career growth as much as I was, and he was always checking in to make sure things were going well and to see if there was anything I needed that I wasn't getting. Everyone at the company really cared about getting people involved in projects they were interested in. They truly believe in involving people in projects that they are passionate about because they know it will make everyone happier and the project is more likely to be successful. I was able to do work that I would have been doing as a full-time hire, which was great for getting a feel of what working in the "real world" would be like. Overall I had a great experience this past summer with this company.

What I wish was different

I wouldn't change anything about my summer experience because I learned so much and felt very welcomed in the company.

Advice

In order to succeed at this company, you have to be comfortable with reaching out to people and be upfront about what you want and what you are interested in working on. I am slightly shy and initially I had a hard time reaching out to different employees within the firm. I ended up getting over that and I was able to build professional relationships with people throughout the office which has been great for my career growth.

Civil Engineering Intern

What I liked

The team was so welcoming from day one, always encouraging me to ask questions when I didn't know something and checking in with me to make sure that I was doing well. They gave me challenging tasks that felt like I was really making a difference, and gave me responsibilities of a starting full-time analyst. The rest of the interns felt like a family and they threw an "Intern Day" for us to learn more about the company and we got polos and Yetis. They also employ the use of lunch coupons, a program where you get 6 coupons throughout the summer to take a person in the company out to lunch that will be paid for. It was a great summer!

What I wish was different

I wish there had been more initial intern events, but once all the interns were there then things started to pick up and we did more events.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask questions, that is the number one way to be successful as an intern there! And take every job and try to do your best at it, no matter how big or small it may seem. Being enthusiastic and putting your best effort towards every task you get is the best way to impress the full-time workers.

Advice

Get to know people, make friends, and communicate any questions or concerns. Take advantage of perks like lunch coupons and fun events in and outside of the office.

Environmental Scientist Intern

What I liked

I enjoyed performing wetland delineation fieldwork, where I utilized GPS units, identified vegetation types, analyzed soil characteristics, and traveled to different cities around the Midwest! The office culture was very welcoming and supportive; I connected with various professionals within the company, while learning about the consulting field and the importance of technical skills and communication. Overall, I loved applying my knowledge from environmental science classes in an exciting, fast-paced environment.

What I wish was different

Advice

Taking technical classes, such as Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and statistics (using RStudio), can give you an advantage while learning job-specific tasks in certain roles. I would strongly recommend taking a GIS class if you are interested in environmental consulting!

I wish I had asked to try a different department for the extra experience. Just hard to fit it all into one summer.

Advice

Ask a lot of questions and ask for feedback as much as possible to improve yourself and hopefully get an offer.

The company culture was really great. They had a well-established intern program that included HR calls, a workbook to guide you through company policies and culture, and an 'intern day" at the headquarters in Raleigh, NC, that they flew all the interns in the region to. They also provided me with lots of work and made sure I was learning through the process.

Make the most of the opportunity to learn at this company. They are really excited to teach you, so ask questions!

I loved how open they were to letting me work on whatever I was interested in. I had so many opportunities to go on site visits, work on different projects, and work with a variety of awesome people.

I wish I would have stayed longer so I could actually see a project from start to finish.

Go in with an open mind and be willing to accept any opportunity presented to you. Every experience is a good one and helps you learn.

What I liked

It was such a good working atmosphere. The leadership's top priority was that everyone has opportunities to learn and grow and that people enjoy their working experience. It wasn't just about making a profit. They had many initiatives and workshops for younger engineers and women engineers. I felt super supported every day.

What I wish was different

There was a lot of pressure on me to integrate socially and get to know as many people as possible. Although it worked out at the end, it brought me way out of my comfort zone sometimes and was really exhausting.

Advice

Take every opportunity you can to get to know other employees. Join an intramural sports league, go to trivia night or happy hour one day after work, or jump in on any volunteer opportunities the employees take part in on behalf of the company. Things like that are great when it comes to understanding if you want to build a career alongside these people.

What I liked

I enjoyed working closely with with people in my department and learning so much. I also really enjoyed and benefited from all of the efforts made by HR to get the interns together, such as weekly lunches, the summer presentation, and the big intern day.

What I wish was different

Can't think of anything!

Advice

Don't be too intimidated by the amount of people you will meet and work with. Everyone was very welcoming and understanding if I didn't remember their names right away. Do your best to get to know everyone throughout your entire internship, not just within the first few weeks.

Transportation Engineering Intern

What I liked

I loved how easy it was to have access to help with Kimley-Horn. The transportation engineers were all very willing to support and help me learn more about the field and I could approach all of them with ease and comfort.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have seen a project from very beginning to very end. It was the intention of my supervisor for this to happen, but due to unforeseen project delays, this was unable to happen. Not the fault of my supervisors or Kimley-Horn's at all.

Advice

I came into transportation knowing nothing about the field and left with a ton of knowledge. Definitely pick the brains of your co-workers, especially those with decades of experience by asking tons of questions.
