Viasat Inc

Software Engineering Intern

June - September 2022 • Carlsbad, CA

What I liked

Supervisors gave freedom as to what direction I want to take when working on the project, and they respected my work style. I got to work on the project independently. I had a lot of opportunities to network with other engineers and learn about the company. The work & life balance is great and I got the impression that the supervisors and the team cares a lot about my mental & physical well being.

What I wish was different

Since I worked remotely, it would've been nicer to get more experience working onsite. It would have been nicer if I got some kind of training related to my project prior to diving into it, because I didn't have enough background knowledge on the topic.

Advice

The internship is for you more than anything! Try to get the most out of it. Don't be shy to reach out to people and ask for career advice, or anything about the company or the work they do at Viasat. If you have any ideas then don't be shy to share them, because they will hear you out!

Software Engineering Intern

June - September 2021 • Carlsbad, CA

What I liked

The work I did there was actual work, not just an intern project. We created a system that would be used by our whole team and were proud of it.

What I wish was different

We had to work with lab equipment while remote, it was doable but much more challenging than it could have been if they let us come in person for even a day/

Advice

Work hard!

Product Quality Engineer Intern

May - August 2019 • Carlsbad, CA

What I liked

They treat their interns like employees. The teams are very inclusive and the people are interested in your career development. They give you very meaningful projects that directly impact the business. They are located in fantastic locations. It is a great company to do an internship with!

What I wish was different

I wish they could have been more transparent with my performance after the end of my internship. I was under the assumption that I had performed well, and was hopeful to receive an offer. When I didn't, I could not find out why. Without this, how can I improve?

Advice

Don't get caught wasting time by attending all of the events they put on for you while putting off your work. Attend them when you can and enjoy yourself, but remember the main reasons you are there is to perform well on your projects, and do everything you can to stand out.

Computer Hardware Engineer Intern

June - September 2019 • Cleveland, OH

What I liked

Flexibility within the company was great, even as an intern. Was given lots of opportunities to learn about what was most interesting to me.

What I wish was different

Was on my own project for most of the summer so I wish I had opportunities to work with the other interns more.

Advice

Be prepared to work independently during some times. You are expected to be a self starter and you will not always have a project manager telling you what to do.

RF Engineer Intern

What I liked

Viasat was a very friendly and supportive environment.

What I wish was different

The internship did not match the job description. There was little to no hands-on work.

Advice

Internships (and jobs) are rarely the way that they are described.

Advice

training and Development Intern

May 2017 • Denver, CO

What I liked

It was a great experience. I got to do lots of hands on work for the company. They treated me like an employee in training rather than an intern. The also had a very robust intern program. They offered speakers and travel opportunities as well. This was very helpful to learn more about ViaSat as a company and more about opportunities in this career field.

What I wish was different

There isn't anything I would really change about the program as a whole. It would have been nice to get to know other interns in the building outside of the ones I met. Although they had a few social programs doing a few more things at the beginning of the summer would have been nice.

Advice

Never compare yourself to others and be willing to do the work. I noticed that I seemed to be working a lot harder than many of the other interns. In the long run, I gained lots of meaningful experience and was able to continue through the year/
