I liked that I had the chance to research in a topic that may have been understudied or not really mentioned in media. It was also great to meet others from different colleges or universities.

Advice

iSchool Inclusion institute (i3) is an undergraduate research and leadership development program prepares for graduate studies and careers in the information sciences. It gives undergraduate students the chance to develop their own research projects with the possibility to be published.

What I liked

I loved being able to interact with patients everyday! I was able to see what healthcare looked like for different populations of people. I also loved the small team of researchers that I was able to work with!

What I wish was different

I, an eager beaver, was ready to take on more projects! I wish that I was able to work on more than one project at a time.

Advice

My advice would be to not let healthcare professionals make you feel inadequate. It is very difficult to talk to people in the field with much more experience because they might not make you feel welcome and comfortable. Be persistent and keep your head up!

I liked the flexibility of my work. I was working on multiple, diverse projects at once during my time at the office, and I found it exciting to be able to jump from one interesting task to the next, quickly. I learned a lot more about how I best manage my time from dictating how long I would spend on each project.

What I liked

I really enjoyed the opportunity to do research alongside graduate students and learn from them (as well as from my PIs) more about what it would be like to be in grad school full-time. This experience gave me the chance to explore a new field (environmental engineering) that is related, but different than my current field of study.

What I wish was different

I wish that I could be there longer and continue working with my PIs. I really enjoyed the whole experience and there is not anything major that I would change about it.

Advice

Don't be discouraged if you're walking into an internship that you feel under-qualified for. Keep working hard, ask lots of questions, and pay attention to the people who are there to help you and you'll be fine.

I enjoyed the fast paced rigor of the program. Also, the classroom sessions about MSTP programs and applying to Medical school were very informative.

More independence and say in my project

Be sure to make relationships with your Primary Investigator (PI). This will be necessary for future recommendations and possibly future collaborations.

Teaching Assistant, StarTalk Russian Language Summer School

I thoroughly enjoyed this role. The teaching assistant team was given lots of freedom and responsibility to create lesson plans and manage the students. We incorporated our own ideas to our lessons and worked together well as a team.

StarTalk programs are intensive for both the students and staff. Be prepared for long but rewarding days!

What I liked

I was employed by the Governor's School for Global Studies at the University of Pittsburgh. I was personally responsible in supervising 15 to 17-year-olds when they were not attending class during the day. I loved the hands-on experience I got and I really liked watching the kids grow and get to know each other over the course of the program. My supervisors and coworkers were all very pleasant to work with.

What I wish was different

The hours were a little weird, but that's just part of the job.

Advice

Working for a Governor's School program is definitely a great opportunity for younger college students. I know there are Governor's School programs all over the country, I am sure there is at least one in Michigan. It is a great experience if you are interested in teaching high school. We had opportunities to sit in on the kids classes and we had a lot of fun organizing activities. One piece of advice I'll share is that you should be fun and make the experience exciting for the students, but also let them know who's boss and that rule breaking is not acceptable. This was their first time in a college-like setting and that freedom can be dangerous.
