Project Intern

June - August 2023 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I liked the mentorship and advice that I received. It was very easy to ask my bosses questions.

What I wish was different

I wish that my commute had been shorter. While this isn't a problem with the job itself, it detracted from my experience that I would spend over 3 hours a day commuting.

Advice

I would advise others that have this experience available to document everything they do throughout the summer at work.

Commercial Department Intern

June - August 2018 • Flushing, NY

What I liked

This summer I was given the opportunity to intern on the LaGuardia Airport construction project with Skanska USA Civil Northeast. Working full time for three months on a construction site I saw various different roles within the company. I worked daily with project engineers, estimators, project managers, and superintendents to name a few. One thing I specifically liked was how helpful all the employees I worked alongside were. As an intern they made me feel very comfortable to ask questions or general career advice, which I appreciated greatly. I also enjoyed going out on the job site to verify drawings, update statuses, or meet with foreman to discuss specifications. Attending meetings with different teams within the project was very interesting to see how valuable communication and coordination are in this industry(especially on a project of this size). Lastly I liked how I was given real responsibilities that played a role in creating change order packages. Seeing work I completed displayed during a meeting or used in an official change order package was a good feeling.

What I wish was different

The only thing I wished had been different, was my ability to try out new roles. Throughout the summer I worked within the commercial team in the financial department, handling change orders , design claims and back-charges. Although this role was very interesting and important, I would like to have moved around to multiple teams rather than stay with the commercial team all summer. This wish should come to fruition next summer where I will be placed with a different team and supervisor which I look forward to.

Advice

If I were to give a piece of advice about my internship experience this summer, it would be to ask questions. At first I felt uneasy in a new environment to ask questions I thought may be considered unintelligent. Quickly I realized that my supervisor was not expecting me to know everything about an industry I am just beginning my career in. After this realization I began to ask any question I wanted to know or thought would be important. My supervisor even explained to me that asking questions at this age shows an employer that you have the initiative to expand your knowledge of a subject rather than to assume and make mistakes.
