McKenney's Inc.

Project Management Co-op

January 2023 - August 2024 • Atlanta, GA

What I liked

McKenney’s was a great place to work as a co-op. I liked how quickly I learned about the business and was immediately given responsibility. The company counts on the work from the co-ops to complete and aid in everyday operations, and it was visible that the work I put in made a difference. The company prides itself on the development of its co-ops and puts a lot of effort into teaching and growing their skill sets. One of my favorite parts about working the job was the amount of communication I had with workers across the entire company, and with other companies as well. I interacted with field workers, engineers, project managers, vendors, and our customers daily; and was given the opportunity to make impactful decisions. I was told on my first day working that I would be given as much responsibility and opportunity as I wanted if I put in the effort. In hindsight, this statement proved to be spot on. I was given the opportunity to run a couple of projects near the end of my second co-op term and although stressful, I learned so much from the experience and got a feel for what a full-time position would be like at the company. On top of the opportunities McKenney’s gives co-ops, I would say the best part about the company is the friendly atmosphere. I looked forward to going into the office and out on site every morning because of this atmosphere. Everyone I interacted with was so friendly and welcoming and always willing to go out of their way to help me with anything I needed. All my expectations were exceeded working for McKenney’s and I would highly recommend it to any college student interested in an internship or co-op job.

Advice

If you are planning on working at McKenney's, my biggest piece of advice is to take advantage of the opportunity you are given. Come at it with an open mindset and be ready to learn a lot of information quickly. The company will give you as much work/responsibility as you are willing to take on.

What I liked

I loved the hands-on experiences with a variety of fields! Our lead team was very good about letting us dive into fields we were interested. They actually cared about our career development and what we were getting out of the internship.

What I wish was different

I wish there could have been more opportunities to learn about data science and analytics.

Advice

Take on your own projects! It can be slow sometimes, so it's a lot better to learn rather than be bored.

Construction Project Manager Intern

What I liked

My favorite part about working for Mckenney's was I told them during my interview I wanted to get into Project Management and wanted to be out in the field and that is exactly what I got to do. I was working full time this summer CO-Oping in Social Circle, Georgia building a Facebook Data Center. During this CO-Op, I worked hands on everyday on the job site helping full time project manager with whatever tasks they needed and learning more and more about what the company did everyday. I was tasked with meeting everyone at the site and working with them directly to solve their needs. I learned about all the mechanical systems that are incorporated into this design, learned how to markup construction drawings and learned how to work with top of the line project management computer programs in order to make sure everything on the job site stayed on schedule. Along with this, to show my knowledge and hard work off at the rest of the semester, I was given the opportunity to present what I learned in front of my Co-workers.

What I wish was different

I don't wish anything was different. I was very pleased that I got to do exactly what interested me to Co-Op in the first place. I was also pushed hard to learn as much as possible which I don't think would've been the same at any other Co-Op.

Advice

One piece of advice I would give is to truly research the companies you are applying for before you interview. Knowing exactly what my company did before I interviewed helped me to know what I was getting into and that I would truly love it on a daily basis.
