J.M. Smucker Company

Logistics Intern

May - August 2019 • Orrville, OH

What I liked

The culture of this company and all the employees is tremendous! I enjoyed everyday I went to work and was able to learn and grow everyday. They care about giving you a great experience to take with you at the end of it all. The skills I learned better helped to understand the concepts in the classroom too.

What I wish was different

The internship position is not very organized and doesn’t follow an actual plan.

Advice

Be proactive during the experience and ask questions a lot. It will help you learn and experience more in all aspects and will show that you want to learn more from them.

What I wish was different

Nothing really, the internship program at Smucker's is something of its own breed. They really know what they are doing.

Definitely to not be shy and ask questions to anyone about anything; everyone is really friendly for the most part and will be willing to help you in anyway they can.

Information Services Intern

May - August 2019 • Orrville, OH

What I liked

I really enjoyed the company culture and the location of the headquarters. I thought the people I worked with were friendly, knowledgeable, and clearly demonstrated the company culture and ethics. The commute to the Orrville campus was very relaxing and the campus is very modern, clean, and organized.

What I wish was different

The internship was a great experience, but if there was anything I wish had been different, it would be that I spent more time learning about the programs I was using and less time in meetings and working on my PowerPoint presentation.

Advice

One piece of advice I would share about this experience is to not be afraid to put yourself out there. Meaning, network with as many people as you can, build meaningful workplace relationships, and don't be afraid to ask questions and just be your best and most professional self.

Support Services Intern

May - August 2019 • Orrville, OH

What I liked

The people were amazing, I felt like I was able to make an impact, and overall a great program and company culture. Everyone cares and wants you to succeed. A lot of free food and coffee.

What I wish was different

I had a unique manager situation, but expectations should be clear on what their responsibilities are. One manager was transitioning positions and manager that was tasked doing my review had no idea what I was working on. Definitely a unique situation I was in compared to other interns.

Advice

Get to know as many people as possible. There are a lot of great opportunities available at Smucker.

Quality Assurance Intern

April - August 2019 • Oxnard, CA

What I liked

I was given a lot of responsibility beyond that of a typical internship, the pay was excellent, and I got to do what a professional in my field would literally do in my position.

What I wish was different

There were some times where I would be asked to do things that I did not feel like my managers were willing to do.

Advice

You are a supervisor in this position, so you need to be willing to represent the J.M. Smucker Company in a union environment. This means you will need to stand your ground in some instances, but you also get to work with some excellent people.

Supply Planning Intern

January - August 2019 • Orrville, OH

What I liked

Smucker's is a great company. They really take care of their people and especially their interns. They offer weekly meetings with your department so you can get exposed to different parts of the business. They have quarterly reviews that your manager presents to you and gives you advice on things to work on. They talk about career goals. You have access to a lot of the leaders of the company including the CEO Mark Smucker. They have a lot of perks that interns are encouraged to take advantage of like a full-size basketball gym, workout area, workout classes, half-day Fridays, Dr.'s on staff. Anything you can imagine they have. It is a wonderful place to work

What I wish was different

Nothing. The whole experience was perfect!

Advice

If you work hard and stay on top of things, you will get recognized and hopefully presented with a full-time job.

Category Management Intern

May - August 2018 • Edina, MN

What I liked

The people at Smucker's are truly incredible. My manager, everyone in the office, and the team in Orrville were all so supportive, genuine, and helpful. They were great resources who were willing to answer any questions that I had. The work was also unique and rewarding. I worked on a wide variety of projects that put me in front of new tools and allowed me to grow in a really meaningful way. I was treated as a valuable asset to the team, not just an intern.

What I wish was different

Nothing - I had a fantastic experience and would highly recommend the company to anyone.

Advice

Ask questions. You have the unique opportunity to work with industry experts with such a wide variety of backgrounds. You will learn so much if you take the time to ask questions, show interest, and have the initiatve to be involved in new project areas.
