Hewlett Packard Enterprise

Electrical Engineering Intern

June - August 2022 • Colorado Springs, CO

What I liked

- Every 2nd Friday off - Company Leadership - Company Resources - Intern onboarding - Projects were interesting

What I wish was different

- More structure - Better description of what the job would be (it changed every few months before my start date as they progressed on projects) - Better department leadership - More people working on my projects at my location (only 4 people in my department at the location with 10 people in the whole complex) - I wish I had networked better to help secure a return offer (hiring freezes prevented me from getting one from the department where I worked)

Advice

- Make sure to take into account the personal aspects of moving long distances for a job where you don't know anyone at the place of work or the location where you are moving to, it can be a big adjustment - Ask all the questions you can think of as soon as they come to you and write them down, when you are starting a new position at a bigger company there is likely a lot of internal jargon that you will need to learn ASAP if you want to get your projects done on time.

Sustaining Engineer Intern

What I liked

People-centered culture. The people. The pace of learning. The number of free trainings. The pay.

What I wish was different

Nothing. Perhaps it would have been nice to go on-site, but none of us had control of that.

Be bold! Share your talents!

Information Development Intern

June - September 2020 • San Jose, CA

I learned a lot about technical writing as a profession and learned how to use some of the software that they use to write and publish work. I also got to attend a lot of intern seminars where recruiters would come and talk to us about starting our careers.

What I wish was different

That it had been in-person :/

Advice

Ask questions and talk to everyone on your team even if it's just to pick their brain for a bit!

Design Verification Engineer

May 2019 • Plano, TX

What I liked

I was working on real tasks for the product my group was working on, rather than getting a made-up project to complete.

What I wish was different

I wish I had learned a bit more about the other fields that the group worked in, such as the physical chip manufacturing process.

Advice

Even if you don't think the internship is exactly what you want to do when you finish school, it's a good idea to go for it anyways because you might find you like the subject much more than you expected!

Strategic Customer Engagement Intern

June - September 2018 • Palo Alto, CA

What I liked

I appreciated being able to both project manage multiple cross functional projects that allowed me to grow as an essential part of a structured team, as well as develop my professional skill sets of concise communication, streamlined timelines, and identifying strengths and pitfalls. It was an enriching experience that expanded my knowledge in multiple areas of marketing, networking, and presentation. I feel extremely honored to have been part of Hewlett Packard Enterprise for the summer and the roles and responsibilities given to me!

What I wish was different

If I had to choose what would have been different, I would have suggested a strengthening of the "intern" experience at Hewlett Packard Enterprise. Although there were many interns in different departments, there was a lack of activities and bonding between us. I appreciated the tight knit networking of our team specifically, but would have also loved the opportunity to get to know the other interns!

Advice

As for advice, I would suggest that regardless of your background or previous experience, just apply! It's important to set yourself up for success by knowing that you ARE capable of success. From my particular position, some general advice would be to ask questions, but also research the answer for yourself. Be confident in your understanding in your role so you can add creativity and innovation within your projects. Also, create a timeline and stick to it - this is helpful not only in the workplace, but in life.

Digital Marketing Intern

June - September 2017 • Palo Alto, CA

What I liked

The team was amazing. I was surrounded by highly diverse experts in the field and able to learn a lot from every member of my team. People were always willing to make time for me and help me push forward to accomplish my goals. I was integrated into team meetings and never felt intimidated to speak my mind. I learned a lot and loved my time there.

What I wish was different

The work load was a little light, it was a 40 hour a week internship and it probably could have easily been 20 hours a week.

Advice

Be a go-getter. Ask for work and projects. Make sure you participate actively and not passively. You're there to make a difference on the team, so make one.

Finance Associate Intern

May - August 2017 • Houston, TX

What I liked

It's a very relaxed atmosphere with a company-wide no dress code policy, great benefits, and a lot of good people. At least in finance, pretty much everybody gets return offers.

What I wish was different

Especially for a tech company, the workforce is aging and there's way too many layers of management, which should change with the upcoming layoffs. However, HPE is going to need to cut down really quickly to be able to adapt to the quickly declining enterprise tech market and it has to position itself much better in growing markets (like IoT) to become an exciting tech company to work for.

Advice

Talk to a lot of people within the firm--they're really great people. But also, make sure to ask questions and do research about the future of the company.
