Cheese.production worker and ammunition producer

April - August 2019 • West Middlesex, PA

What I liked

I learned a lot about how cheese was made and how a basic factory produces.

What I wish was different

I wish the temperature was a little warmer for we had to keep the temperature low for minimum bacteria growth.

Advice

production of cheese is way more complex then one thinks and takes multiple days for cheese to be made, so don’t take your cheese for granted.

Corporate Credit Intern

May - August 2019 • Kansas City, KS

What I liked

I thought the company culture was great. They seemed to genuinely care about the wellbeing of the farmers that are a part of DFA. There was a lot of interacting with other interns, including a meaningful fundraising project. Learning about the department I was in, as well as other departments, was definitely an interesting experience.

What I wish was different

I did not always have enough work to do and most of what I did was "busy work", so I felt that I did not get a chance to contribute as much as I could have.

Advice

Network with those in your department as well as fellow interns. And have fun. This role was a great opportunity to acquire on-the-job experience toward a professional career, but you also have the chance to meet a great group of individuals and possibly even make new friends.

Continuous Improvement Intern

May - August 2018 • Springfield, MO

What I liked

Very friendly work environment Worked at 2 different manufacturing plants Got introduced to Lean Manufacturing techniques (Kaizen, TPMs, 5S, etc.) Worked closely with another CI intern Great first internship experience overall; future employers loved hearing about my involvement with Lean Manufacturing and all the different projects I worked on during my time there

What I wish was different

I wish I would've had a few larger projects that I could really take ownership of Some weeks were full of things to do, while others were very slow Wish I could've traveled a little more with my supervisor to experience more of the plants in the division

Advice

My supervisor traveled a lot, so I did a variety of tasks for lots of different people in different engineering areas, so definitely need to be a self starter. And manufacturing life is not for everyone, but it is a great introduction to the food and beverage manufacturing industry to be able to see if its a good fit for you.
