This was my 5th internship experience, so I would have liked to be stressed more. As in get more work than I could handle to see how well I could juggle many tasks.

Advice

Talk to as many people as possible. You will be surprised by the amount of incredibly talented and smart people you will meet.

What I liked

The highly technical project and the right balance of being guided and being free to explore and develop ideas independently.

What I wish was different

I wish my mentors were as enthusiastic about my work the first 10 weeks as they were the last 3.

Advice

Try to learn as much as possible. You're doing an internship to expand your knowledge-base, and you should try to squeeze every last bit out of it. You'll be amazed how unrelated experiences can help in the future, so treat everything as an opportunity to grow.

Service Strategy Intern

What I liked

BAE Systems Inc. is an amazing company to work for! Their internship program offers many workshops and panels for career development as well as opportunities to network with other interns and employees across the company. The projects you work on are not mundane, they are very involved and hands on. I felt like the work I was doing really made an impact on the program and company overall. The work environment was very friendly, and everyone I worked with was very helpful.

What I wish was different

Since the internship was on a cleared government site, my supervisor was often on the classified side of the building where I did not have access. Sometimes it was difficult to ask questions or communicate ideas because of this disconnect.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask questions, supervisors like to see you make an effort to understand as much as you can! Don't be afraid to try projects that aren't necessarily in your skill set.

Technical Intern II

What I liked

I was involved in a lot of different things going on. Projects ranged from helping with researching new technologies to be included in the new ships to helping with the design of the new ships communications systems. After some time I felt like I was apart of the team and was included in almost all meetings and events that happened with the team of engineers I was working with. As for the location, it was nice because I was near water and so there was lots of seafood and beaches. Also, I was not too far from Washington D.C. or Baltimore. Not a lot to do in the city I lived in but stuff was near by.

What I wish was different

I wish I was given more time to prepare for the Co-op. Wasn't a lot of time from the time of acceptance to the time of start.

Advice

Co-ops/Internships are what you make of them, the more aggressive you are for finding work the better experience you will have. You will be bored on occasion just be proactive and try to find work and ask for work. If you don't know something ASK!

Electrical Engineer- Technical Intern II

What I liked

During this co-op I have worked on a multitude of projects, including designing a Low Pass filter and cutting it using an LPKF Laser or characterizing metallization on a processed GaN wafer. This opportunity presented endless opportunities to learn not only process engineering but expose me to the RF defense industry. It allowed me to build my confidence as a young engineer by exposure to project management and a plethora of high end design programs such as Genesys, ADS, Cadence OrCAD, and many more.

What I wish was different

The only thing I would change is asking for more opportunities to work in the fabrication lab. I networked a lot and ended up receiving a return offer from a different capability group at BAE that works specifically in the fab. However I wish I would of networked earlier so I could of experienced it a bit more this co-op.

Advice

When beginning your first internship/co-op don't be afraid to ask questions. Your employer knows that you don't know everything but do expect you to be motivated enough to learn on your own and network.

Mechanical Engineering Intern

What I liked

I got some really good engineering experience and was able to work on lots of projects.

What I wish was different

It's hard to get a lot of work to do at BAE without a security clearance.

Advice

Make sure to get your security clearance paperwork in early. Work can be a little slow at the beginning, so try to have multiple things to work on so you don't get stuck with nothing to do.

Technical Intern 3

What I liked

The team I was working on and the people I've met at BAE have all been wonderful. The work I was doing felt impactful and I was greatly supported in the process.

What I wish was different

I wish there were a couple more opportunities to meet other interns in person, as there weren't many in my building, but there were a couple of opportunities in-person and virtually.

Advice

I would recommend any interns at BAE to experience as much of the company as possible, as it is a huge company that has so many different business areas. I highly recommend internships at BAE!
