BAE Systems, Inc.

Technical Intern III

July - December 2018 • Hudson, NH

What I liked

I learned a lot about electronic systems and how mechanical and electrical engineers can work together to create some very complicated and cool products.

What I wish was different

I wish that the atmosphere had been more collaborative. Everyone seemed to keep to themselves a lot.

Advice

Working on such important, technically challenging project was a little intimidating to me at first. I set up weekly meetings with the manager on my biggest project. That way I could be sure that I was on the same page about the objectives throughout the process and get some of my bigger design decisions double checked.

Contract Administrator

June - August 2019 • Fort Walton Beach, FL

What I liked

The experience of working for a big company and learning all the ins and outs of what they actually do was really cool. The coworkers were all really friendly and the overall experience made me look forward to applying to work there full time after graduation.

What I wish was different

Due to being only an intern the amount of work was limited. There were high points of new projects where i would get to do or learn something new but there was a lot of downtime, but i was getting paid so cant really complain.

Advice

I felt that doing an internship was very beneficial towards my overall career. Not only did i get good work experience towards learning about a certain career path and business but it was a great opportunity to get my foot in the door with a great company and boost my resume.

Operations Finance Intern

June - August 2019 • Nashua, NH

What I liked

The atmosphere of the company was great. I was given the freedom to try the problems on my own before asking for direction. Everyone treated me as a regular employee rather than a summer intern.

What I wish was different

I wish I was given more responsibility, but overall I thought it was a great experience.

Advice

Trust your instincts and go with your gut when solving problems. The worst case scenario is that you got it wrong and have to go in a different direction, but at least you put the effort in and tried.

Technical Intern

May 2018 • Hill Air Force Base, UT

What I liked

The work is fascinating, and its nice to see part of my schooling prepare me for real-world tasks. The people are what make the job and I am working with people who are hard-working and easy to talk to. They never shot down any of my questions and were more then helpful when it came to assisting me in accomplishing my tasks.

What I wish was different

The work pace is transient. Some days will be very slow, and others will by high-tempo.

Advice

This internship is at a company that is a contracted out by the Air Force, so the Job will give you a really good taste of government work. People have commented that the government is has a slower approach to tasks due to countless checks and balances and quality assurance, which some people really like.

Technical Intern 4

June 2019 • Fort Walton Beach, FL

What I liked

Amazing co-workers. Managment has been very active to involve me in a diverse set of projects. I've programmed, researched components, and produced multimedia. A source for opportunity that is challenging and satisfying

What I wish was different

I wish I had a designated cubicle when I transfered to a different group within BAE. For a while I was bouncing around to whatever was open, only for the owner of the cubicle to come back from traveling.

Advice

Involves working with legacy hardware, so keep that in mind. New technologies are being developed, so the limit is your own enthusiasm

Application Developer

June 2016 • Roy, UT

What I liked

I'm doing what I love

What I wish was different

Nothing

Advice

No matter what position you find yourself in you can find something to do in that position related to what you want to do for your career. If course it has to be beneficial to your job role and if you can fulfill your role more completely with the new things your doing you'll be recognized for it. I've been working in a software developer role for over 2 years. A role that requires a degree, but I do not have my degree yet. After I'm done with school I don't have to look for work and I'll get a significant pay raise. Don't wait to do what you love. You don't have to have a degree to do it, you just need the degree to satisfy corporate requirements in a lot of companies. The degree is just a piece of paper to get you through the door. Your capabilities are what keep you there. So start doing it now.

What I liked

The community of fellow interns and full time employees was amazing, and going to an employee meeting opened my eyes to the social aspect of a technical defense community

Advice

It's a place definitely worth going to if your interest is defense systems or tech in general. The people are nice, the projects interesting, and the times fun.

Industrial Engineering Intern

May 2018 • Nashua, NH

What I liked

I was given fantastic opportunities to work on real time problems from supply chain pick systems to capacity analysis for test stations. I was also allowed to stay throughout the school year working a day or two a week as needed and have continued to do so to present.

What I wish was different

Quite honestly nothing, the situation was about as good as it gets for students like me.

Advice

Ask questions and look for problems to solve. There is always something to do, you may just have to go out and find it rather than be told to do it.

Technical Intern

January 2019 • Hudson, NH

What I liked

The project I worked on over the summer was great. I also loved the interns I worked with. BAE brings in alot of people from other schools and they have ALOT of interns over the summer, so there's lots of opportunity to socialize and meet people.

What I wish was different

Work for the first 6 months was slow. Its hard being a part time intern- they don't know what to do with you because you're not there enough to work on the pressing and important tasks.

Advice

advocate for yourself and find meaningful work. don't hope it will just fall in your lap
