Surgical Pathology Technician

Join the UPMC Hamot team as a full-time Surgical Pathology Technician! In this vital 1st shift role (Monday–Friday, 7:00am–3:30pm, with occasional 6:00am–2:30pm coverage), you’ll play a key part in examining surgical specimens and supporting critical diagnostic work – without weekend or holiday shifts. In this role, there is the opportunity to –

  • Examine and prepare surgical biopsy specimens for microscopic evaluation, providing gross descriptions according to Surgical Pathology Manual guidelines.
  • Verify complete and accurate patient identifiers on requisitions and containers, rejecting specimens with discrepancies.
  • Receive, accession, and label specimens in the Laboratory Information System (LIS), ensuring proper tracking and documentation.
  • Utilize voice recognition software to document gross appearances and maintain accurate case records.
  • Perform special specimen handling procedures, including radiography, photography, and special fixation techniques as needed.
  • Correlate patient history with specimen type and consult with admitting clinicians when inconsistencies arise.
  • Maintain and replenish laboratory supplies and ensure availability of necessary materials for daily operations.
  • Ensure proper functioning, routine maintenance, and timely repair or replacement of laboratory equipment and instruments.
  • File and retrieve surgical and autopsy specimens, maintaining accurate logs and adhering to compliance standards for handling biohazardous materials.
  • Participate in mandatory safety meetings, training sessions, and compliance education to support a safe and regulatory-compliant work environment.

Qualifications:

Required

  • Associate’s degree in a laboratory science AND 2 years of hospital laboratory experience OR
  • Bachelor’s degree in biology or related health sciences required AND 1 year of hospital laboratory experience, preferred
  • Good oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively with all age groups and populations of external and internal customers as well as co-workers both by telephone and in-person

Preferred

  • Knowledge of medical terminology and laboratory information system experience
  • Biology, Human Anatomy & Physiology and Forensic background
  • Above average computer skills
