Role Description
We are seeking a highly motivated intern to join our HTS transmission and energy storage team. This role will focus on developing superconducting cable systems and magnetic energy storage (SMES) technologies for resilient microgrid applications.
You will work alongside leading engineers and scientists to model, design, and prototype next-generation HTS-based solutions that directly support critical infrastructure needs, including data centers, defense installations, and renewable energy hubs.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in the design and simulation of HTS DC transmission cables and SMES systems.
- Perform electromagnetic, thermal, mechanical, and power system circuit simulations (Ansys, COMSOL, or equivalent).
- Contribute to the integration of cryogenic cooling and power electronics systems.
- Analyze system performance and optimize for minimal energy loss, high current density, and reliability.
- Calculate short-term and long-term application economics, including operational costs and return on investment.
- Support lab prototyping, wiring, and system assembly for HTS transmission demos.
- Prepare documentation, test plans, and experimental reports.
Skills & Qualifications
- Pursuing a degree in Electrical Engineering, Energy Systems, Applied Physics, or related field.
- Strong understanding of electromagnetics, superconductivity, or cryogenics preferred.
- Familiarity with simulation tools such as Ansys EM, COMSOL Multiphysics, or equivalent.
- Knowledge in power systems, power conversion, power quality, and power cable design.
- Understanding of applications for microgrid and hyperscale data center energy infrastructure.
- Ability to perform basic circuit analysis and system-level design.
- Ability to conduct basic economic analysis on system deployments, including operational and maintenance costs.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
- Hands-on lab experience is a strong plus.
Other
- Senior undergraduate or graduate students preferred.
- Flexible timing on start and end dates; minimum 10-week commitment preferred.
- Option to be onsite at our office in Stony Brook, NY, or remote with regular check-ins.
- Passion for next-generation energy technologies and real-world impact.
