
Paleontologist
Frontier Resources is a small environmental consulting company in Vernal, Utah that specializes in environmental regulatory compliance. We are seeking a paleontologist to assist with pre-construction paleontology surveys and monitoring for fossils during construction.
Responsibilities:
- Assist with pre-construction paleontology surveys and monitoring during construction in a variety of areas
- Use topographic maps, aerial photographs, GPS units, and other maps and tools to navigate to exact locations of project sites and survey locations
- Operate and maintain off-road vehicles
- Write detailed field notes that will be legible to others
- Communicate effectively and professionally with co-workers, and clients
Qualifications:
- Understanding of geology, anatomy, taxonomy and paleontology
- Completed Bachelors Degree
- Completed or working towards a Masters Degree in paleontology, geology, anatomy or closely related field
- Basic understanding of laws and regulatory requirements related to paleontological resources
- Ability to identify fossils in the field
- Experience conducting paleontology studies and/or surveys in the field
- Ability to conduct fieldwork safely for long hours in extreme environmental conditions
- Ability to walk up to 10 miles per day, often in rugged terrain
- Ability to take initiative, resolve problems, and create improved procedures
- Willingness to adapt to rapidly changing schedules including occasional weekend work and gaps in work
- Knowledge of desert ecology, botany and wildlife a plus
Compensation will be hourly based on experience and will include overtime when applicable. Lodging is a possible benefit and can be negotiated as part of the compensation package. This is a seasonal position. Work schedule will usually be 30-40 hours per week from April through October, but other schedules could be accommodated.
