Transportation Engineer 9-12 (Bridge Unit Design Engineer) - Bureau of Bridges & Structures

Are you interested in working on a multi-disciplinary team responsible for the design of structures across the state of Michigan?  As a bridge design engineer for MDOT, you will have the opportunity to use your knowledge of structural engineering to complete the design of new structures and the reconstruction of existing structures, including bridges, large span culverts, and unique foundations for ancillary structures.

As a member of one of MDOT’s in-house Bridge Design Units. you will have the opportunity to grow your knowledge of structural engineering principles, gain experience with structural design standards, and contribute to the success of a team.  You will complete structural design calculations, develop plan details used in construction, develop project specifications to clearly convey construction requirements, and assist the construction oversight team in responding to contractor inquiries and address construction challenges. 

As a bridge design engineer at MDOT, you will be responsible for:

  • Complete field visits to bridge sites throughout the state of Michigan to verify the scope of work for projects.
  • Coordinate with other members of the multi-disciplinary team to obtain information impacting the design of the project.
  • Propose unique and innovative solutions to structural challenges.
  • Use design programs, spreadsheets, and other tools to design elements of the structure.
  • Review shop drawings and construction submittals for compliance with the project design and specifications.

The "Salary" listed above is a range that reflects the minimum rate at the entry (9) level through the maximum rate at the advanced (12) level. Based on education and experience, candidates will be reviewed to determine what level they are qualified for.

Required Education and Experience

Education

Possession of a bachelor of science degree in engineering.

Possession of a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering preferred. 

Experience

Transportation Engineer 9
No specific type or amount is required.

Transportation Engineer 10
One year of professional engineering experience involved in transportation systems and programs equivalent to a Transportation Engineer 9.

Transportation Engineer P11
Two years of professional engineering experience involved in transportation systems and programs equivalent to a Transportation Engineer, including one year equivalent to a Transportation Engineer 10.

Transportation Engineer 12
Three years of professional engineering experience involved in transportation systems and programs equivalent to a Transportation Engineer, including one year equivalent to
a Transportation Engineer P11.

 

Alternate Education and Experience

Transportation Engineer 9 - 12

Possession of a registered professional engineer license as required by the State of Michigan may be substituted for 6 months of experience at the Transportation Engineer 9-12 levels. This substitution may only be used once for any employee for qualification of appointment or early reclassification.
