Construction Intern

ABOUT THE ROLE

The internship program at Clēnera is designed to give current undergraduates an opportunity to immerse themselves into the complex world of renewable energy. We have created thoughtful experiences across four major departments in the company: Business Development, Construction, Engineering, and Finance. Students who will be successful in this program will bring a passion for the renewable energy industry, a strong work ethic centered around self-motivation, and a desire to learn and grow by working alongside some of the best and brightest in the industry. 

 

The Construction Intern will gain hands-on experience in managing utility-scale solar projects by working directly with a project team in the pre-construction and execution phases. You will support the project management teams through various tasks, such as reviewing being involved in daily and weekly site work planning, assessing change orders for accuracy, and assisting in the review of designs for PV, HV, and BESS systems. Additionally, you will contribute to the RFP process by reviewing documents, assembling exhibits, and analyzing pricing discrepancies to ensure competitive bids.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

  • Review daily Plan of the Day (POD) reports from the EPC contractor, ensuring accurate reporting of quantities, schedule forecasts, and construction progress. Providing input to PM team on updates or discrepancies.
  • Help evaluate change orders submitted by contractors, ensuring they align with the contract, and verifying the cost impacts are accurately represented before approval.
  • Gain exposure to the technical aspects of utility-scale solar project construction by reviewing photovoltaic (PV), high-voltage (HV), and battery energy storage system (BESS) designs.
  • Support the Request for Proposal (RFP) process by reviewing documents, assembling relevant exhibits, and ensuring all necessary project information is clearly communicated to potential contractors and vendors.
  • Consolidate RFP pricing from contractors, analyze submissions for discrepancies, and highlight variances in pricing, scope, or terms to support the selection process.
  • Collaborate with individual department, as well as cross-functionally with other departments within the organization.
  • Maintain organizational excellence in terms of project timelines and deliverables.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Education: Undergraduate or graduate student, preferably entering their final year, pursuing a degree in construction management or engineering.
  • Technology: Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, and an ability to learn company-specific software programs, tools, processes, and machines.
  • Skills/Attributes:
    • Foundational knowledge of the key pillars of project management: cost, schedule, and scope.
    • Ability to gain basic knowledge of how a solar facility is designed and structured between PV, BESS, and substations.
    • Develop a basic understanding of the financial model and how we use it as a company.
    • Basic understanding of the overall EPC Agreement structure, including our obligations due to contractors.
    • Capable at nurturing new relationships for collaboration in achieving shared goals.
    • Self-motivated to work through complex problems and competing priorities, including a high level of detail and organization.
    • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
