This is a Student Internship position under the Pathways Internship Program.

To qualify for this internship, you must be a continuing student enrolled or accepted for enrollment for the upcoming semester for the duration of the internship as a condition of employment (taking at least a "half time" course load). You will be required to provide documentation (transcript, enrollment certification, etc.) to support eligibility. Students may be employed throughout the academic year.

The Civil Engineer Pathways Student Intern will assist FHWA's Ohio Federal-aid Highway Division "Engineering and Operations Team" with bridge and pavement reviews; project reviews; construction inspections; and work zone reviews. Additionally, duties will include report writingdata analysis, and assisting with discretionary grants projects.

As a Civil Engineer Pathways Student Intern, you will:

  • Review and provide insights on Federal laws, regulations, and FHWA policies applicable to Federal-aid projects.
  • Assist in conducting project reviews in accordance with the Division’s Risk-Based Stewardship and Oversight plan.
  • Assist in reviewing required project actions for appropriate application of design standards and criteria, conformance with policy and regulations.
  • Assist in authorizing project agreements which may include reviewing the adequacy of proposed rights-of-way clearances, NEPA, construction plans, agreements for utility and railroad work, consultant agreements.

The ideal candidate for this position is currently enrolled in an engineering degree seeking program; is currently studying to be an engineer with the ability to analyze data and monitor Federally funded highway programs or assist in the review of highway projects from initial scoping through construction support and maintenance; and experience conveying ideas and concepts to persuade others in meetings, discussions, and in writing.
