Planning and Engineering Services Intern

Salary to be commensurate with experience

The hiring range for this position is $17.90 - $24.29/hourly

 

This is classified as VHNE (Variable Hour Non-Benefit Employee), where the selected candidate will work less than 29 hours per week. This position does not provide medical benefits. This position earns sick leave in accordance with the Healthy Families and Workplace Act.

Aurora Water – Planning, Engineering, and Technology Division
Aurora Water is responsible for providing life sustaining services to the residents, visitors, and businesses of Aurora. We plan, design, operate, and maintain the drinking water, sanitary sewer, and storm drainage systems throughout the City.  Our major infrastructure includes three potable water treatment facilities (totaling over 200 million gallons per day), a reclaimed water treatment facility, and over three dozen pump stations, lift stations, and major Pressure relief valves. Aurora Water’s mission is to enhance and protect the quality of life for Aurora citizens by providing safe, dependable, and sustainable water, sewer, and stormwater services, today and in the future.

 

The Aurora Water Planning Services team works closely with internal staff and consultants to develop master plans, create asset management plans, and perform modeling analyses to support the utility.

 

 

THE POSITION
This posting is for a Planning and Engineering Services Intern.  This position will perform general junior level civil engineering assignments which may include, but no be limited to, performing research and reviews related to plans, supporting the Asset Management group in updating operational manuals, assisting with the completion of the utility’s Water Loss and House Bill 10-1051 reporting, performing data analysis to inform decision making, and other design efforts and evaluations. Some GIS experience is helpful. Hours are projected at +/- 25 hours per week dependent on workload over the course of the year. The internship will primarily consist of office assignments, but the selected candidate may have the opportunity to attend site visits. The position may require in-person and virtual work dependent upon training and task needs.

 

PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Research Colorado Water Conservation Board HB 1051 procedures and compile Aurora Water data in Excel, in collaboration the City staff
  • Research AWWA M36 Water Loss procedures and compile Aurora Water data in Excel, in collaboration with City Staff
  • Assists in completing tasks for the Asset Management group
  • Assists Project Managers in any additional tasks related to planning or project management tasks
  • Maintain and meet project deadlines
  • Review technical documentation/reports
  • Demonstrate high level of decision making, critical thinking, organizational, and administrative skills
  • Collaborate with other high-performing team members and staff to accomplish project goals and objectives
  • Responds to requests from City staff 
  • Performs other duties as required

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & WORKING CONDITIONS

 

ducation:  Have completed, or in progress of, a Bachelor of Engineering Degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or directly related field from ABET accredited program
 
Experience:  

  • 0-2 years of experience in engineering technology or related field preferred
  • Familiarly with basic engineering practices
  • Experience working in a fast-paced environment

 

Knowledge:  

  • Basic knowledge of civil or environmental engineering. Knowledge of engineering drawings, calculations, specifications and project management, contract administration and procurement rules, department policies and procedures is a plus
  • Beginning or intermediate ability to utilize critical thinking to perform evaluations and recommend solutions
  • Preferred: Basic knowledge of applications required to perform job functions (MS Platform, SharePoint, MS Teams, EADOC/PM Software, Innovyze Models and AMANDA if applicable)

 Licenses or Certificates Required:  

  • Engineer Intern (EI) or Engineer in Training (EIT) certification; or plan to obtain EI/EIT certification prior to graduation
  • Colorado (or other State) driver's license with a good driving history

Physical Demands:  

  • Primarily sedentary physical work requiring the ability to lift a maximum of 10 pounds
  • Occasional lifting, carrying, walking and standing
  • Frequent hand/eye coordination to operate office equipment
  • Vision for reading, recording and interpreting information
  • Frequent speech communication and hearing to maintain communication with employees and citizens

Work Environment:
