Water Resources Student Internship

Position Details
- Applicants must be current students at accredited schools, residing within a reasonable commuting distance of SAWPA during the internship, and pursuing a degree related to SAWPA's activities.
- Internships are limited to a one-year term and do not include benefits, except for sick leave.
- Intern is expected to work an average of 20 hours per week and no more than 960 hours per fiscal year (July 1st to June 30th).
- Work hours are flexible and must remain during office hours. Remote work is available by an agreement between the Department Manager and the student intern.
- individuals that are a member of the California Public Employee's Retirement System (CalPERS), are ineligible for intern positions with SAWPA.
- The internship offers a starting wage of $16.00 per hour. Effective January 1, 2025, the wage will increase to $16.50 per hour in accordance with the state minimum wage increase.

Examples of Duties

- Assists with the development of regional water resources studies.
- Updates data using spreadsheet tools, drafts presentations, and assists with grant applications.
- Evaluates, plans, and contributes to a variety of water resources and environmental planning studies and projects.
- Performs research on water resources topics based on State’s priorities.
Knowledge of:
- Administrative and office procedures and systems such as word processing, managing files and records, designing forms and workplace terminology.
- Basic organizational, technical and computer skills, strong written communication, and research skills.
Skills and Abilities:
- Use computer software applications related to the field of work.
- Understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
- Proper English usage, punctuation, grammar, and spelling.
- Analyze data, situations, and research materials.
- Formulate options and make recommendations.
Typical Qualifications
Any combination equivalent to experience and training that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities would be:
- Experience: While no prior work experience is required, knowledge of the methods and techniques of research, report preparation and administration are desired.

Training/Education: Graduation from high school or G.E.D. equivalent. Current enrollment in undergraduate or graduate studies in an accredited college or university with major course work in
- Civil Engineering, Environmental Science, Geology, Public Administration, Water Resources Planning, or related fields.
- License or Certificate: A valid California Class C driver’s license, which must be maintained throughout employment with the agency; maintain a driving record acceptable to the Agency’s automobile insurance provider.
