Real Estate and Facilities Engineering Summer Intern

Engineers at Electric Boat work collaboratively across departments and with our customer to develop innovative solutions for the United States Navy’s nuclear submarines. As an Intern, you'll be exposed to various engineering activities with the support of our senior staff. This program grants our trainees the opportunity to develop valuable skills and dive into cutting-edge projects such as leading the Columbia Class design and enhancing Virginia Class submarines. Every intern will be exposed to a wealth of knowledge in order to excel in the engineering domain.

 

This program requires an 8 to 12week commitment during the Summer 2025 Season.

 

Participation in this program requires medical screening, passing a drug test, and potential DOD Investigation

Groton Facilities Engineering – Summer Internship

 

Job Description:

 

The Electric Boat shipyard is experiencing a period of unprecedented growth. Existing facilities are undergoing renovations and new buildings are under construction with more coming.  Now is a once in a lifetime opportunity to be a part of a dynamic team responsible for shaping the future of the shipyard.

 

The Real Estate and Facilities Directorate is responsible for new construction, renovation and infrastructure projects supporting the 100+ year old Groton shipyard and surrounding sites.  Our multidisciplinary team of engineers, project managers and designers develop and execute construction projects as well as provide maintenance and troubleshooting support to existing shipyard systems, buildings and docks.  The systems the Real Estate and Facilities Directorate are responsible includes, but is not limited to, water based systems (fire protection, potable, sewage, storm drain), compressed gas systems (nitrogen, argon, oxygen, propane), compressed air systems (high pressure air, low pressure air), boiler and steam systems, HVAC, industrial ventilation, submarine support systems and above and below ground electrical distribution.

 

The Real Estate and Facilities Summer Interns may be responsible for the following tasks:

  • Support managing projects and surveillances
  • Performing calculations on fluid systems, structures, and components
  • Drawing and Procedure reviews and updates
  • Research relevant codes in support of construction and inspection
  • Preliminary project development

To be qualified for this position:

  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • US citizenship is required.
  • Must be able to successfully pass a medically supervised drug screen and background check.
  • Must be enrolled full-time at a college or university
  • At minimum students must have completed their Freshman year prior to the start of the internship.
  • Must be available to work 40 hours per week for a minimum eight (8) consecutive weeks between May 2025 to September 2025.
  • Selected candidates will be responsible for establishing housing and reliable transportation for the duration of their intern assignment.
  • Pursuing a Bachelor or Masters of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Ocean Engineering, Chemical Engineering
