Mechanical Inspector

The City of Saint Paul Department of Safety and Inspections is hiring a Mechanical Inspector to perform full-performance inspections to ensure that mechanical alterations and installations are done according to approved plans and specifications and in accordance with pertinent portions of the Minnesota State Building Code.  

Here’s what you can expect to do:

  • Inspect and report on installations and alterations of mechanical work to assure that approved materials are used, and proper workmanship is performed. 
  • Order and enforce corrections on items that are not in compliance. 
  • Perform tests of mechanical installations, equipment, and materials.  
  • Interpret code to fit both typical and unusual situations.

 Position Requirements:

High School or Vocational School Diploma and the possession of an official certificate documenting the completion of an apprenticeship as a steamfitter or gasfitter, such as issued by the State of Minnesota and five years of experience as a journey-level steamfitter and gasfitter.

Or, High School or Vocational School Diploma and eleven years of experience in steamfitting and gasfitting, with at least seven years at the journey level, three of these seven years holding a Certificate of Competency for Refrigeration, Steamfitting, or Gasfitting. 

Must possess a Certificate of Competency issued by the City of Saint Paul or Minneapolis for Steamfitting, Gasfitting, and Refrigeration. Must have a State of Minnesota High Pressure Piping License at the time of appointment and must obtain an Oil Burner Certificate of Competency within six months.

Must possess and maintain a valid Minnesota Class D Driver's License, or equivalent out-of-state driver's license.
