PdM Condition Monitoring Co-Op

Condition Monitoring Unit Overview
The team operates in all plant areas - supporting the Melt Shop, Flat Products Rolling Mill [Hot Mill], Flat Products Cold Mill [Cold Mill], Long Products Rolling Mill, and Long Products Finishing Mill. We collect various data (visual, vibration, thermal, lubricant sample, etc.) from assets, determine whether the data is within acceptable parameters, report threshold violations, and support line-specific mechanical maintenance teams’ efforts to increase asset productivity by focusing on detecting wear and failure modes at incipient stages.
We have a vibration data collection & analysis team (electrical-oriented) and a lubrication &
visual inspections team (mechanical-oriented) through which we can provide in-plant Co-Op experiences. Depending on the unit’s daily workload and plant needs, Co-Op duties may be cross-functional between electrical- and mechanical-oriented tasks. Working closely with the corresponding Condition Monitoring Engineer or DayTech, one or more of the following tasks may apply to a Co-Op.

Electrical Engineering Co-Op Relevant
Vibration Data Collection (maintain online and route-based data collection infrastructure)
● Add or repair sensors and cables on assets.
● Help supervise and support contractors in adding or repairing conduits, junction
boxes, and multi-cable installations.
● Help troubleshoot networking issues with Information Systems team support.
Vibration Data Analysis
● Learn the fundamentals of Vibration Analysis by working with the Vibration Data
Engineer and DayTech and using training materials available within the Unit.
● Monitor PROGNOST Predictor advanced gear & bearing vibration monitoring system
dashboard and report abnormalities to the appropriate team member(s).
● Monitor System-1 vibration monitoring system dashboard and report abnormalities to
the appropriate team member(s).

Mechanical Engineering Co-Op Relevant
Lubrication
● Become familiar with the various types of lubricants used throughout the plant.
● Help collect periodic and non-routine oil samples from various reservoirs and
gearboxes, prepare the samples for laboratory analysis, and deliver sample packages
to Stores for shipment to the appropriate laboratory.
● Perform field tests with various instruments.
● Become familiar with interpreting lubricant analysis reports and comparing results to
NAS-established parameters.
● Assist with lubricant-related sensor trials – including hardware installation, sensor
programming, data validation, and interpretation.
Rotating Equipment Visual Inspections
● Assist with open-lid gear inspections (line-of-sight & videoscope/borescope visual
inspections of gear tooth and bearing conditions) and become familiar with standards
related to gear tooth and bearing wear & failure modes.
● Assist with bearing disassembly inspections to identify wear and failure modes on the
various components.
● Assist with periodic infrared thermography inspections on furnaces and other assets
as requested.
● Assist with compressed air ultrasonic leak detection efforts.
Non-Rotating Equipment Visual Inspections (Mechanical & Structural Integrity Program)
● Research and find miscellaneous asset drawings in various digital libraries; copy them
to an MSI data library.
