Why does the job exist?

 

The purpose of this position is to perform chemical analyses of water samples and other environmental samples for inorganic contaminants for statewide water testing programs in accordance and compliance with Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) requirements.

How does it get done?

 

This position will require testing of environmental samples to include surface, ground, drinking water and soils, for metal, inorganic environmental contaminants and testing of environmental air quality filters. Duties include management of samples from clients, proper preservation and handling, and preparation of data packages for data reporting. Position will operate Flow Injection Mercury Analyzer, Turbidimeter, Analytical Balances, Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectometry, and Inductively Coupled Plamsa Optical Emission Spectroscopy instrumentation.

New Mexico Department of Health, New Mexico Environment Department; Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department, New Mexico Department of Game and Fish, City of Albuquerque, and New Mexico Tribal Entities.

Ideal Candidate

 

Bachelor's degree in chemistry or one of the Natural Sciences. Candidate should possess 2-5 years of experience in a scientific lab or related field experience. Experience in testing environmental samples, including drinking water, for metal inorganic analytes using Mass Spectroscopy, Optical Emission Spectroscopy, or Flow Injection Mercury System. Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) for sample management.

Minimum Qualification

 

Bachelor's degree in Chemistry or closely related field and two (2) years paid experience in chemical experimentation and analysis in a laboratory setting. Substitutions Apply. See Substitution Table below.

Employment Requirements

 

This position is designated a safety sensitive. Employment is subject to pre-employment and random testing, in accordance with all terms and conditions of federal and state law, rules and regulations in relation to alcohol and/or drug testing.

Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive a Defensive Driving Course certificate. In state and out of state travel may be required. Successful completion of Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) is required.

Working Conditions

 

Work is performed in a fully functional laboratory containing biological, chemical, physical, and radiological hazards. Incumbent will be required to use all applicable safety equipment provided by the employer and follow all safety precautions specified by the employer. There will be extended standing, repetitive trunk/arm/hand/neck movements with computer usage or assay/methodologies utilized. Work involves using high voltage electronic instrumentation, and high pressure gas cylinders. Ability to lift/push up to 50 lbs.
