Engineering Intern

Core Job Responsibilities

Assist in the design, fabrication, and testing of Composite Overwrapped Pressure Vessels (COPVs)

  1. Filament winding of composite structures (fiber set-up, resin mixing, machine operation, etc.)
  2. Cycle and burst testing (test set up, pump operation, clean up, etc.)
  3. CAD work (SolidWorks)
  4. Finite Element Analysis of composite structures

 

Assist in the design and fabrication of test fixtures and other shop necessities

  1. Metal work including lathe work, mill work, cutting, and welding
  2. Wood work including cutting and drilling (building shipping crates)

 

Help manage a preventive maintenance program for equipment including filament winding machines, industrial ovens, air compressors, forklifts, pump systems, etc.

  1. Perform regular maintenance tasks such as checking/ changing fluids and filters, greasing chains, inspecting belts, etc.

 

Assist in the maintenance of an AS9100 quality system (aerospace standard based on ISO 9001)

  1. Assist in the creation of document templates, process controls, and shop floor work instructions
  2. Scan and file project documents in the quality management system

 

Help manage shop cleaning, organization, and materials inventory

  1. Assist in the floor plan, layout, and process flow of a new fabrication shop
  2. Lead efforts to ensure that every tool and material has a place and is returned after use
  3. Perform organization tasks such as returning tools and materials to their proper places, sweeping, dusting, clearing work surfaces, and taking out trash
  4. Perform inventory management tasks such as checking shelved quantities and placing orders

 

Typical Minimum Eligibility Requirements

  1. Pursuing a degree in an Engineering Discipline (Mechanical, Manufacturing, or Electrical) from an accredited university
  2. High proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, Powerpoint, Outlook)

Desired Skills

  1. SolidWorks or other CAD
  2. Technical writing
  3. Basic engineering skills (design, analysis, problem-solving, coding, etc.)
  4. Data acquisition, instrumentation, and test system operation
  5. Hands-on work experience
    1. Construction, landscaping, engine maintenance, heavy machinery, hand tools, etc.
    2. Composites experience, welding and/or machining experience are particularly beneficial
