Staff Engineer I or II (DOE) - Transportation

GENERAL PURPOSE

Assist in the coordinating, designing, developing, and constructing of the City infrastructure. Serve as an engineering project leader or manager on smaller projects. Provide independent interpretation and execution of policies governing the City engineering. This position will be focused on traffic and transportation engineering for the City.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Ensures compliance with codes and standards; screens for traffic, parking, drainage, right-of-way, and special planning commission action requirements (annexations, zone changes, special use permits, etc.). May train other contractors and City staff on code compliance.
  • May assist and direct roadway design plans under the supervision of the City Engineer.
  • Work to create roadway signing and striping plans as directed by City Engineer.
  • Conducts engineering division reviews and approvals of commercial and residential project plans and construction drawings during the development review process. Including reviewing transportation infrastructure plans to ensure adherence to City Standards, MUTCD, AASHTO, and ITE Manuals.
  • Completes preliminary designs of utility systems; aids in establishing City master plan for various infrastructure systems, including the Transportation Master Plan.
  • Prepares preliminary and final construction plans for roadway, water, sewer, and storm drainage capital improvement projects for the City; ensures correct calculations and measurements.
  • Develops design plans for field survey data. Ensures correct statistics and data to make recommendations on designs and plans.
  • Coordinates a variety of operations and projects related to traffic and signalization project design and management, infrastructure analysis and public works systems. Prioritizes projects and prepares engineering reviews.
  • Serves as liaison with Federal, State, County, and local jurisdictions; represents the City as staff to various commissions and task forces.
  • May administer multi-departmental committee meetings such as the Traffic Committee, including receiving and responding to public feedback.
  • Assists with various aspects of project management and scheduling. Adheres with established standards and consultant activities and complies with standards and contract specifications.
  • Maintains City maps showing annexation requirements per State code; provides miscellaneous drafting services to other departments as needed.
  • Prepares various reports, projections, and evaluations as required; provides input and recommendations to City Council and committees as required.
  • May perform traffic studies and direct the City traffic counting programs.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering or comparable degree from an accredited university.

Experience:

  • One to Four years of progressively responsible Civil Engineering experience including experience in planning, drafting, GIS, municipal services and directing civil engineering projects.

Certifications/Licenses:

  • Must be at least 18yrs old.
  • Passed Fundamentals of Engineering Exam
  • Working towards Professional Engineering License
  • Requires a valid Utah Driver's License.
  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug test, background check, and driving record check
  • A working knowledge of AutoCAD and ArcMap.
