Civil Engineer - Hydraulics

Job Duties

Are you someone driving by innovation, with a passion for design? The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is looking for professionals with hydraulic engineering experience, who can support us in constructing new drainage designs to keep Virginia safe and moving!

VDOT’s Culpeper District seeks a Civil Engineer to provide field reviews, engineering analyses, reports, and recommendations on drainage design requirements for transportation projects. The incumbent will communicate with VDOT staff, local government officials, consultants and citizens regarding transportation projects and support roadway, maintenance and bridge design staff in hydrology and hydraulic principles and design. Will also develop and design hydraulic models and draft drainage design elements for right of way and construction roadway plans and review hydrologic and hydraulic designs prepared by others. Will oversee hydraulics related issues to ensure compliance with processes, schedules, budgets, design criteria, standards, and specifications.

Minimum Qualifications

• Engineering experience applying roadway design criteria, construction methods, standards, specifications, and materials.
• Skill in the use of computers and software applications to include engineering design and analysis programs and CADD software.
• Experience applying peak discharge hydrology, open and closed system design, erosion and sediment control features, and stormwater management.
• Knowledge of civil engineering principles as they relate to hydraulic, roadway design and standard design technical knowledge.
• Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with internal and external customers.
• Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities with competing deadlines.
• Valid Virginia Driver’s License required.
 

Additional Considerations

• Work experience in transportation and engineering project management.
• Knowledge of VDOT’s Road and Bridge Specifications and Standards.
• PE License or EIT certification
• Knowledge of VDOT drainage policies, design procedures and FEMA policies and procedures to include VDOT’s Drainage Manual.
• Proficiency in hydraulics of bridged waterways, bridge scour analysis, flood routing and calculation of run-off values.
• A combination of training, experience or education in Civil Engineering, or related field desired.
• Erosion and Sediment Control Program Administrator Inspector or Plan Reviewer Certification.
