Regional Water Engineer/Engineering Associate (Engineer/Engineering Associate II)

This position serves as a Regional Water Engineer/Engineering Associate in the Bureau of Environmental Health Services, Beaufort and Charleston Regional Offices. You will be providing advanced engineering expertise for the area's water programs, including but not limited to, drinking water, wastewater, and stormwater programs This position may perform supervisory and/or training duties.  

Job Functions:

  • Reviews and evaluates engineering plans and specifications pertaining to proposed water supply, wastewater, and recreational water projects, to ensure compliance with the state regulations and the standards. These reviews consist of the following:
    • Evaluation of engineering design data and application of treatment techniques.
    • Occasional onsite review of the design of the system.
    • Reviewing of the Department's records of the system, to evaluate the adequacy and efficiency of the system.
    • Writing of the approval to operate, including application of any special conditions concerning operational phases of the project.
    • Conducting final inspections on the projects.
  • Review and evaluate engineering reports pertaining to procedure modifications to existing water systems.
  • Provide technical assistance to the general public, public officials, staff members, water and wastewater treatment plant operators, industries, architects, and consulting engineers concerning water and wastewater matters.
  • Assist in the performance of sanitary surveys on public water systems to ensure compliance with minimum operating and water quality standards.
  • Review and comment on draft NPDES permits, Drinking Water Operating Permits and consent orders.
  • Investigate complaints in water, wastewater, and other programs as requested.
  • Respond to emergencies pertaining to public water and wastewater systems 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
  • Performs other related duties, including, but not limited to:
    • Making public presentations concerning water supply, pollution, and general environmental matters.
    • Attending public meeting.
    • Collecting water samples as needed from streams, out-falls, public and private water supply systems.

 

Minimum and Additional Requirements

 

  • A master's degree in engineering;
  • OR a bachelor's degree in engineering, and one (1) year of experience in environmental engineering;
  • OR a bachelor's degree in engineering, and two (2) or more years of experience as an engineer.

The education must qualify the applicant to become registered as a Level A Professional Engineer in South Carolina and must meet one of the education requirements outlined on the South Carolina Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulations website found at: https://llr.sc.gov/eng/PDF_Files/LicensureQualificationInformationSheetExam.pdf (Download PDF reader)
