Job Title: Intern - AS&T Educational Collaboration

Location(s): Grand Junction, CO

Status: Temporary – 90 days or less

Anticipated Start date: May 20, 2024

FLSA: Non-Exempt 

Hiring Range:  $14.42 - $15.70/hr.

RSI EnTech, LLC is recruiting for an Internship under the Applied Studies and Technology Education Collaboration task working with Dr. Michael Morse. Work will include investigating site environmental data and completing an independent study based on a hypothesis by the end of the internship term.

 

This position is required to travel or be in the field less than 10% of the time.

 

Primary responsibilities and essential functions:

  • Investigation of site geologic and environmental data to eventually form an independent study.
  • Working with a mentor to identify site-specific, or program-wide evaluations that will benefit the DOE Office of Legacy Management program. 
  • A combination of reviewing site reports, datasets, and/or site field visits may be required as some of the independent study work.
  • Some specific investigations include, but are not limited to: 
    • Analyzing water balance data of disposal cell covers
    • Compiling geologic records to create a 3D geologic solids model using visualization software
    • Estimation potential evapotranspiration through a variety of methods
    • Projecting impacts of climate change on site hydrology and implications to site hazard risk
    • Leaf-area index measurement on vegetated covers, and using the data to calibrate remote sensing ET algorithms
    • Soil moisture and soil suction sensor calibration and field installation
    • Passive flux lysimeter calibration and field installation
    • Using coding and/or scripts (e.g. Python, R, etc.) to process and communicate environmental data effectively
  • Prepare paper and deliver presentation summarizing findings.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Technical knowledge, certifications/licenses, and software proficiency required:

  • Microsoft office including but not limited to Excel and Word

 

Minimum Required Education and Years of Experience:

Completion of 60 credit hours prior to start of internship towards an ungraduated degree in Geology, Environmental Science, mathematics, physics, engineering, or other related STEM fields.

 

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements: 

The employee exerts up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to touch or feel, and reach with hands and arms.  The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and distance vision.  The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate.
