Laboratory Tech

Job Summary
The Laboratory Tech receives patient specimens and enters specimen details into laboratory software. Operates selected laboratory instruments and ensures proper functioning of laboratory equipment. Performs minor troubleshooting and routine maintenance under the direction of department Lead and/or General Supervisor. Reports service issues to General Supervisor. Maintains records and documentation. Data entry accuracy and attention to detail are required for this position.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Review, understand, and follow laboratory procedures.
  • Follow patient identification and patient safety procedures.
  • Evaluate specimen integrity and initiate technical evaluation when integrity is in question (specimen labeling, specimen integrity, etc.)
  • Assists others in area of defined competency when assigned workload is complete.
  • Complete and evaluate all quality documentation without omission and refer situations that fall out of acceptable range.
  • Complies with and follows safety and biohazard regulations as outlined in the Laboratory Safety Manual
  • Maintains clean and orderly work area. Cleans bench surfaces and equipment each shift or after contamination or spills. Completes required documentation.
  • Participate in the quality of the laboratory through evaluation of practices, reporting of quality events and suggesting areas for improvement.
  • Maintain competency associated with laboratory specimen storage and transport.
  • Effectively read and follow written instructions.
  • Utilize a computer for laboratory support functions and know basic Microsoft Office.
  • Work with a team to achieve department goals and objectives.

Qualifications

  • AA or AS degree in any Physical Science , Chemistry Preferred.
  • Applicants pursuing a degree in a Physical Science, experience in a Laboratory setting, and successfully completed college courses in Chemistry, Biology and/or Medical Lab Science may be considered for position.
  • Previous experience in a laboratory or medical facility preferred.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and computer experience preferred.

Preferred Experience

  • Experience with Hand Pipetting
  • Experience with Tecan Automated Liquid Handler
  • Experience with LCMS and Chemistry Analyzers a plus
  • Experience with safely handling chemicals

Working Conditions

  • It is reasonable to anticipate exposure to infectious disease/bloodborne pathogens and/or hazardous chemicals in this position.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to walk, bend down, and lift 30 lbs.
  • Visual and auditory acuity.
  • Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time.
  • Good eye/hand coordination and dexterity.
  • Ability to appropriately dress to avoid exposure to bloodborne pathogens and bodily secretions.

Job Type: Full-time

Salary: $18.00 - $20.00 per hour
