Are you looking to make a difference in your community? Salt Lake County's Most Vulnerable Populations AmeriCorps Program focuses on reducing systematic inequities. Our members help bridge the gap and reduce barriers for a variety of vulnerable populations including but not limited to; youth, individuals experiencing homelessness, and those involved in the Criminal Justice System. AmeriCorps is a voluntary civil society program supported by the U.S. federal government, foundations, corporations, and other donors by engaging adults in public service serve, with a goal of helping others and meeting critical needs in the community. As a Community and Prevention Educator, you'll play a crucial role in shaping the future of our program. Collaborating closely with the Director of Prevention and Education, you'll create a pathway for healing and resilience for the Wasatch community.

POSITION DESCRIPTION:
As part of our strategic plan, we have identified a substantial lack of awareness of Peace House services in Wasatch County. 

The AmeriCorps members will facilitate evidence-based curriculums, engage in community outreach, and cultivate trust in rural Wasatch communities. 

Activities include: 

  • Facilitating Safer, Smarter Kids Curriculums for pre-kindergarten to 5th grade and Safe Dates for 6-12th grades.
  • Implementing anti-oppression theory and practice. 
  • The AmeriCorps Member will receive extensive training, direction, and mentorship, connecting families, children, and community systems to risk reduction providers.


Key Responsibilities:

  • School presentations by educating children to prevent child abuse while providing resources and connecting them to Peace House service and other appropriate child resources in the community. We will empower the youth to connect to trusted adults and seek help if needed. This will help reduce violence in our communities and prevent bullying and other forms of violence.

 

  • Community presentations expand prevention efforts to include parents, grandparents, and any who fit the description of a "one trusted adult", as defined by the Safer, Smarter Kids curriculum. Providing information about preventing, reporting, and the impact of adult education to prevent child abuse.

 

  • Events expand prevention efforts in the community to be able to reach all areas, including rural areas, and gain capacity by having more Peace House presence during more events in the community. This will help connect survivors
    of interpersonal violence to resources and build rapport, trust, and consistency
    with communities that have historically not accessed Peace House services.

 

  • Collaborate with the Prevention & Education team to offer evidence-based curriculums.
    Maintain electronic files and contribute to quarterly reports for program improvement.

 

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  • Engaging teachers, empowering children and engaging parents by facilitating the Safer Smarter Kids Curriculum to prevent child abuse.
  • Stop and or prevent dating violence perpetration and victimization by facilitating the Safe Dates Curriculum.
  • Closing the gap by facilitating community presentations to expand prevention efforts to include parents, grandparents, and any who fit the description of a "one trusted adult".
  • Increasing the protective factor of community connectedness by attending events in Wasatch and Summit counties and engaging the community.
  • Learn to solve complex situations with professionalism, empathy, and from a client-centered perspective.
  • Receive close mentorship and professional development from field experts.

 

SUPERVISION:

  • Weekly check-in with supervisor.
  • Participate in quarterly training.
  • Receive crisis counselor certification.
  • Receive a mid-term and a final evaluation.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Passion for helping children and families impacted by violence.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, and adaptability to different age groups.
  • Commitment to confidentiality and cultural competency.
  • Ability to perform key responsibilities independently and collaboratively.
  • Experience in social services or related fields preferred.
  • Understanding of issues facing unhoused individuals.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Suites

 

Training:

  • Attend weekly meetings and agency training sessions.
  • Participate in AmeriCorps orientation and monitoring visits.

Engage in service projects with other AmeriCorps members.
 

Minimum Requirements:

  • Clear background checks.
  • Current First Aid and CPR certification or ability to obtain within the first month.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Follow state and federal laws on victim confidentiality.

Demonstrated Skills & Competencies:

  • Proactive problem-solving abilities.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to build rapport with diverse stakeholders.
  • Commitment to client confidentiality and cultural humility.
  • Establish and maintain collaborative relationships with agency partners.
  • Duties and responsibilities may evolve with program needs.

Host Site Location: Park City, Utah
 

Additional Information:

Employment and Compensation:

    Part Time (900 hours) Position;  12-month commitment

  • Total Stipend-  $11,187

Education Award upon completion of Term of Service -

                 12 month  (900 hours)  $ 3447.50
