Intern - Asset Management / Engineering

San Antonio Water System Water Asset Management/Engineering Internship

Looking for a rewarding opportunity to get "hands-on" experience with the largest water provider in San Antonio? The San Antonio Water System (SAWS) provides a unique environment where you will experience just that! Our Asset Management Department is seeking enthusiastic interns.
The Asset Management Department is currently accepting applications for Internships. Interns should be available to work immediately and continue through December 31, 2024. The work week will not exceed 29 hours per week. Work location will be in office at SAWS headquarters with the exception of  one day a week field visits which will start and end at headquarters. Work hours will be between 8am and 5pm, Monday through Friday, excluding SAWS holidays. (There is no weekend or night work hours.)

Job Summary:

The selected candidate will assist with data collection, analysis, and update of various assets at different SAWS sites including water production, water distribution, wastewater treatment, and potable water treatment. The candidate will learn how to assist in various tasks related to implementing an asset management program.
 
Essential Functions:

  • Research as-builts for projects to determine asset installation and removal dates.
  • Review asset data stored in different software applications to backfill missing data or identify and document inconsistences.
  • Prepare spreadsheets for asset data updates by reviewing data collected during research and field visits, then correcting to current data management standards.
  • Review work orders for repaired, replaced, or removed assets.
  • Assist with site visits to facilities to collect asset data and verify existing/missing assets. (Intern reports to SAWS headquarters and will ride in a company vehicle with a SAWS employee to the work site.)
  • Review data for quality and accuracy.
  • Identify various assets, such as pumps, wells, disinfection systems, mechanical and electrical equipment in the field and on project documents.
  • Assist in other asset related tasks and data analysis

 Minimum Requirements:

  • Applicants must be actively enrolled in college, be at the Junior level up-to a Graduate student level majoring in one of the following:  Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, or Environmental Engineering.
  • Computer skills necessary include Microsoft Office suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook) as well as the ability to learn new computer programs quickly. Training in other programs such as ArcGIS Pro may be needed. Please list on your application which programs you have experience with and the degree of familiarity.
  • Must be able to work 8am to 5pm at least one day out of the week to assist with site visits. The day of week must be Monday thru Friday, no week night hours and no weekend days.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to report to work on time, maintain a good attendance record, and work all designated work schedules.

 Physical Demands and Working Conditions:

  • Working conditions are both in an office environment and a field environment where there may be construction, rugged terrain, and inclement weather and environmental conditions.
  • Physical requirements include lifting/carrying up to 25 pounds and working around loud equipment occasionally.
  • Subject to standing, sitting, and walking over uneven ground, bending, squatting, and kneeling.
  • Requires visual and hearing acuity.
