Civil Engineering Summer Intern

CITY OF CORTEZ - PUBLIC WORKS ENGINEERING INTERN

 

Assists the City Engineer with the planning and coordination of multiple Engineering, Street Maintenance, Water, and Storm Water projects. Provides support to schedule and coordinate the operation, maintenance, design, and construction process of the department, which involves direct contact with the general public, developers/builders, employees, and other departments or agencies.

 

  • Assists with all Public Works functions as directed by the Director of City Engineer, such as zoning, refuse, recycling, water, transportation, inspections, streets, etc.
  • Assists in tracking project scope, schedule and budget.  Maintains files for all project coordination and activities.  Provides support to ensure that the project QA/QC is maintained. 
  • Assists in preparing proposals and change orders, planning timeline and budget needed to complete projects. 
  • Assists with Right-of-way and Land Disturbance permits to ensure City regulations are met and provides inspections to protect the safety and integrity of the public and City property. 
  • Attends meeting, public hearings, or any other meetings regarding Public Works activities. Attends City Council meeting as needed.
  • Provides necessary reports on a daily, weekly, or other timely basis that will be used to assist in the efficient operation of the department. 
  • Performs manual drafting on projects and small drawings.
  • Assists department in surveying project areas for designs and providing construction guides for project control.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

 

  • Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, with employees, consultants, City officials, and other entities representing the general public.
  • Ability to conduct necessary research and compile comprehensive reports.
  • Thorough knowledge of civil engineering principles, practices, and methods as applicable to municipal setting.  Also contract administration and office procedures.
  • Knowledge of computer-aided design (CAD) software, word processing, spreadsheets and data bases, standard drafting tools, and construction surveying equipment is highly desired.
  • Knowledge of applicable City policies, laws, and regulations affecting Division.
  • Knowledge of all paperwork procedures necessary to complete contract documents, obtain permits, and prepare for construction.
  • Must possess a valid Colorado Driver's License.
  • Public Works or related construction activity experience is desired.
  • Graduate of 4-year college or university with a degree in Civil Engineering or closely-related field.
  • Registration as an Engineer in Training (EIT) in Colorado is highly desired.
