Climate Focused Summer Program Leader

Putney Student Travel collaborates with Columbia University to offer climate-focused programming for high school students in 2024 with the Columbia Climate School in the Green Mountains (residential campus program). This in-person summer program is designed for motivated and curious high school students wishing to deepen their knowledge of climate issues and understanding of the complexities surrounding the climate crisis. Enrolled students in this program will engage with experts from the Columbia Climate School, build a network with other youth climate activists, and become stronger change agents in their own communities. 

We seek qualified group leaders for the following opportunity: 

  • The Columbia Climate School in the Green Mountains at Castleton University in Vermont, June 30-July 13, 2024
  • Mandatory staff training is paid and on-site from June 25- June 29, 202

 

Columbia Climate School summer programs utilize project-based and experiential learning pedagogies and incorporate site visits, interactive activities, and meetings with local experts, industry leaders, and organizations. Group leaders will facilitate group project work, assist Columbia instructors with content-based seminars focused on climate change and climate action, and guide each student through their final capstone project or climate action plan. Group leaders work alongside leading climate and social scientists from the Columbia Climate School in addition to Putney staff. 

Additionally, we seek qualified Program Assistants to support the logistical operations on-site. Program Assistants support the program operations in finalizing and confirming group activities, arranging meals and transportation for the group, supporting student health and safety, managing the group budget, documenting program developments, and coordinating and facilitating activities and excursions with the students.

These leadership positions are 24/7. Group leaders reside alongside our students in the dorms, and are expected to help organize and participate in extracurricular activities, including evening programs. All expenses are paid during the program, including travel to/from the program; a stipend commensurate with experience. 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher, or Significant Relevant Experience
  • Command of or familiarity with climate change content 
  • Experience working with or teaching teens
  • Prior teaching experience preferred
  • Leaders must have their own health insurance and Basic First Aid/ CPR certification
