Position Title: Bilingual Community Outreach 720-hr AmeriCorps Member

Position Summary:

The Manhattan Project National Historical Park, Hanford Site, is recruiting one summer AmeriCorps member to provide Bilingual Community Outreach beginning in late-May 2024 to September 2024 (18 weeks, 720-hrs). The member will conduct archival research to uncover materials that will aid in the development of interpretive programs that share the role of Latinos in the Manhattan Project at Hanford. In addition, the member will develop and present community outreach programs in English and Spanish to help share untold stories of the site and connect to new audiences. The typical schedule is M-F 8:30-5:00 with 30 minutes for lunch. This schedule is subject to change based on program needs. There will be some programs on the weekends as well as some nights (usually wrapped up by 9:00 pm).

About Northwest Youth Corps (NYC):

Northwest Youth Corps was created in 1984 to offer teenagers and young adults an education-based work experience modeled after the historic Civilian Conservation Corps of the 1930's. Today, we serve over 1,000 youth and young adults each year across a four-state region who restore critical habitat, build trails, lead volunteers, educate youth, and respond to local and national disasters.

About Manhattan Project National Historical Park (MAPR):

Tri-Cities, Washington sits at the doorstep of the Hanford Nuclear Reservation, constructed by the Manhattan Project to produce plutonium for the Fat Man atomic bomb dropped on Japan during World War II. The historical record offers only fragmented evidence of the Latino presence during the Manhattan Project. The park seeks to understand the role of Latino workers at Hanford during the Manhattan Project and to share this untold story to engage the local Latino community in the world-changing history that happened in their backyard. Duties and Responsibilities: Major duties are related to learning and working alongside personnel in the National Park Service at the Hanford Site. The incumbent will conduct archival research to uncover materials that will aid in the development of interpretive programs that share the role of Latinos in the Manhattan Project at Hanford. The member will also develop and present community outreach programs in English and Spanish.

Specific activities include:

• 50% of the time will be dedicated to collaborating with park partners to develop and present community outreach programs with some focus on natural resources local to the park and includes a youth photography program that culminates in an exhibition of the participants' work.
• 50% of the member's time will be dedicated to archival research with community, government, and academic partners.

Required Qualifications:

• Bilingual - Spanish and English speaking, reading, and writing skills.
• Willingness to work as part of a team that includes park staff and community partners.
• Experience in presenting informational or educational programs to youth.
• Good written and verbal communication skills.
• Willingness to submit to a government background check.
• Current driver's license and clean driving record.
• A positive attitude.

Desired Qualifications:

• Ability to work in a variety of settings including the outdoors in inclement weather, indoor offices, and archival storage facilities.
• Creativity and a willingness to try new approaches.

Duty Location:

The AmeriCorps member will report to the National Park Service at the Manhattan Project National Historical Park Hanford Visitor Center at 2000 Logston Blvd, Richland, WA 99352

Terms of Employment:

One AmeriCorps member will complete an 18-week term of service, starting late May 2024 through September 2024. The member must complete a minimum of 720 service hours by the end of their term. The member will receive a 30-minute lunch each day and this lunch break does not count towards AmeriCorps member service hours. Training will not exceed 20% of total member service hours. The AmeriCorps member is responsible for providing their own housing and food. Personal transportation is needed.

Program Benefits:

$11,520 living allowance dispersed on a monthly basis and upon successful completion of program requirements, education award amount of $2,626.27. A housing allowance of $3,300 prorated monthly throughout the 18-week term of service is provided.

The living allowance and education award are taxable. Members are responsible for providing their own food. Service eligibility is contingent upon the results of a criminal and driving background check.
