Director of Facilities, Planning, and Management

Ames Community School District is seeking Director of Facilities to begin June 1, 2024.


Summary
Under the direction of the Superintendent of Schools, the Director of Facilities Planning & Management provides administrative services, which includes the oversight, management and coordination of the Ames Community School District Department of Facilities Planning & Management.

Responsibilities/Essential Functions:

  • Provides the administration of Facilities Planning & Management.
    • Assistant Director of FP&M
      • The Maintenance Department
      • The Custodial Department
  • Establishes FP&M annual and long-range budget plans.
    • General Fund
    • $1.34 PPEL Fund (10 year renewal)
    • $0.33 PPEL Fund (Annual Renewal)
    • SAVE Fund
  • Budget management - reviews and authorizes requests for purchases funded by budgets that are included in the approved budget plan.
  • Establishes and maintains Life Cycle Studies for all the buildings in the District.
  • Provides Project Administration of all District projects.
    • Large projects may include management of design consultants, budget development compliance to contract requirements, defining project options, preparation of recommendations of payment to consultants and contractors, and assuring project compliance with codes, regulations, user requirements, and District standards.
    • Small projects define scope, budget, and schedule.  Solicit pricing, organize resources - internal and external, schedule and coordinate work, monitor and verify progress and completion.
  • Provides planning support and knowledge of facilities to administrators, school board, and committees for facility planning efforts.
  • Develops and implements short-and long-range initiatives to improve the Facilities Planning & Management department.
  • Organizes and maintains drawings, specifications and project files for all facilities.
  • Hires, trains, and evaluates
    • Assistant Director of FP&M
      • Maintenance staff
      • Custodial staff
      • Department administrative support

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher with preferred majors: architecture, engineering, business management, construction or facilities related fields.
  • Minimum of five (5) years’ experience in facilities management or related areas preferred.

The successful candidate will exhibit:

  • Strong budget management skills.
  • Strong knowledge and background in the use of spreadsheets, work processing, and other computer programs.
  • Exceptional ability to plan, organize, and implement time-sensitive, complex programs that have legal and compliance implications.
  • Ability to model collaboration, coordination and facilitation of work groups.
  • Ability to analyze data for program development and improvement.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a variety of audiences using verbal, written and technological skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with other departments and communicate with stakeholders.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with others and build positive constructive relationships.
  • Strong organizational skills.
