Summer Intern / Computational Biology

GSK

Department Description:

The Human Genetics and Genomics (HGG) organization is one of the key components of GSK’s research strategy. HGG supports drug discovery and development across the GSK R&D organization through integrative analysis of all forms of genetics and genomics data, as well as the development of new computational and statistical methods to understand the disease mechanisms. We contribute to multiple phases of the drug discovery pipeline and our work drives the development of new medicines for diseases with unmet medical need.

Job Description:

This position will allow the selected candidate to work on a project related to single cell analysis in the context of drug discovery. The scope of the project can include implementing/developing computational methods for compositional single cell data analysis, and/or direct contributions to target identification and validation projects.

Generally, the day-to-day activities will include:

  • Literature review of cutting-edge computational methods for compositional single cell data analysis.
  • Design and perform a benchmark study to compare the performance of existing methods.
  • Apply/implementing cutting-edge computational methods to large scale single cell sequencing data related to human diseases.
  • Present results at team meetings to the GSK scientific community, and publishing results on external conferences/journals.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Pursuing a Master's or PhD in Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Statistics, Computer Science, Data Science, Machine Learning, or a related quantitative field.
  • Comfortable with a programming language (such as R or Python) for complex data analysis.
  • Knowledge of fundamental concepts in biology and statistics.
  • Must be able to work full-time (35-40 hours/week) throughout the duration of the 10-12 week internship (May/June - August).
  • Must have an active student status and/or within 12 months post-graduation from a BS or MS degree program. Post-doctoral candidates are not eligible.
