Undergraduate/Graduate Summer Intern - ESH&Q Office Construction Quality

The Environment, Health, Safety, and Quality Department supports mission performance and operational excellence while stewarding a safe working environment for all employees at NREL (National Renewable Energy Laboratory).

As an intern in the ESH&Q Office at NREL , you will play a crucial supporting role without direct responsibility for specific tasks.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Providing assistance to professionals in understanding contract documents, plans, specifications, and applicable codes.
  • Offering support in reviewing and providing feedback on project-specific QA/QC plans, scopes of work, and procedures.
  • Assisting in the development of engineering procedures, including document control, submissions management, and tracking of project-related items.
  • Supporting the implementation of project-specific QA/QC plans in coordination with project safety plans.
  • Contributing to the establishment and maintenance of working relationships with various stakeholders to ensure compliance with QA/QC plans.
  • Participating in the coordination of Quality Control procedures at different stages of the project in alignment with the project schedule.
  • Aiding in the continuous improvement of strategies and tools for documenting, tracking, and recording compliance with contract documents.
  • Assisting in the facilitation of inspections with third-party testing and inspections, including the analysis and reporting of results.
  • Supporting the oversight of the development and tracking of punch lists and ensuring the removal and replacement of non-compliant materials.
  • Contributing to the research and application of additional Quality Control and Lean procedures to enhance project delivery.
  • Providing assistance in overseeing project close-out and quality reports.
  • Supporting organizations in monitoring, assessing, trending, and reporting on management systems data.
  • Participating in assessments, inspections, and other essential meetings.

This internship offers a unique opportunity to provide valuable support within the Quality Assurance/Quality Control domain at NREL, contributing to cutting-edge projects in the renewable energy sector.

Basic Qualifications

Minimum of a 3.0 cumulative grade point average.

Undergraduate: Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a bachelor’s degree program from an accredited institution. 
Post Undergraduate: Earned a bachelor’s degree within the past 12 months. Eligible for an internship period of up to one year.

Graduate: Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a master’s degree program from an accredited institution. 
Post Graduate: Earned a master’s degree within the past 12 months. Eligible for an internship period of up to one year.
Graduate + PhD: Completed master’s degree and enrolled as PhD student from an accredited institution.

Additional Required Qualifications

  • Knowledge of the construction process, means and methods, materials, and installation procedures.
  • Very strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Knowledge of laws, regulations, principles, procedures, and practices related to the field.
  • Ability to use various computer software programs.
  • Adaptability to new and challenging situations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Trade experience in new construction is preferred.
  • Certifications in quality management (e.g., Certified Manager of Quality/Organizational Excellence, Certified Quality Auditor, Certified Quality Engineer, Lead Auditor Certification, etc.).
  • Experience and knowledge of DOE policies and regulations.
  • Experience with formal work planning and control, conduct of research practices, and Integrated Safety Management (ISM) best practices.
  • Collaborative experience with a diverse science and engineering research staff.
  • Experience with multiple Quality Management Systems is preferred (e.g., ISO-9001, ISO-14001, ISO-17025, ISO 45001, ANSI-Z1.13, DOE O 414.1, CMMI, etc.).
