Structural Design Engineer

We are looking for a Design Engineer to join our team in Kansas City, MO. This early to mid-career-level role is an exciting opportunity to grow your skills as an engineer and advance your project management skills. For this position, we are specifically looking for a Design Engineer interested in tackling commercial and residential projects as the exact focus of the position is to be determined based on need. Flexibility is an essential quality for this position.

 

As a Design Engineer, you’ll start by learning the in’s and out’s of Apex’s design standards. From there, you will move onto mastering work requiring the application of both standard structural engineering techniques. You will work under the supervision of an Apex Project Manager with the goal of developing your applied engineering skills. Our projects use all types of construction materials, and no two projects area never the same. You’ll probably pick up some commercial work here and there as well- this is a job with a lot of variety.

To be a successful candidate in this position, you must demonstrate intermediate to advanced skills in Revit as our engineers manage their own Revit files.

 

Please note that this is not a remote position. Daily attendance in the office is expected.

 

Day-to-Day Responsibilities

  • Plan preparation, designs, calculations for residential and/or commercial construction projects requiring basic, regular and repeated solutions.
  • Works on a few, small projects at a time, adhering to deadlines.
  • Structural analysis and design of new and existing structural systems.
  • Completes reports, structural calculations and technical documentation.
  • Utilizes Revit to complete 2D and 3D designs.
  • Prepares detailed design drawings.
  • Completes shop drawing reviews, truss certifications, and i-joist certifications.
  • Responds to all emails and RFIs within 24hrs by just letting them know you received it at a minimum.
  • Coordinates with the client, coworkers, contractors, suppliers, and others to gather project information and making all necessary measurements and sketches to record field conditions and conversations.

  • Communicates with clients, supervisors and others on project status.
  • Performs in a teamwork environment.
  • Recommends ways to improve process, quality and coordination efforts.
  • Monitors their own hours and progress towards project completion.
  • Initiates project billing at appropriate milestones.
  • Completes timesheet on a daily basis to ensure project accuracy.
  • Corrects all in-house review comments within two attempts after receiving feedback from reviewer.

Qualifications / Typical Experience

  • Experience in computer applications for engineering design (Revit, RISA, Enercalc, etc.)
  • Prior internship and/or post-bachelors work related structural consulting experience preferred.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong problem solving and analytical skills.
  • Able to effectively handle multiple projects.

Salary Information:

Salary for this position depends on the experience and certifications you bring into the role.

  • EIT with 0-2 years of structural design experience for vertical construction projects ($60,000-$72,500)
  • EIT with 3-4+ years of structural design experience for vertical construction projects ($70,000-$80,000)
  • PE/SE with structural design experience for vertical construction projects ($75,000-$85,000+)

Requirements

Education Requirements

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Architectural or Structural Engineering required.
  • 2+ years of post-bachelor's experience in structural engineering (preferred)

Other Requirements

Candidates must be legally authorized to work permanently (i.e. without time limitations, without restrictions or without need for work sponsorship) in the United States.
