Civil Engineering Internship - Design & Construction

Washtenaw County Road Commission (WCRC) is seeking students for an internship with the Construction & Design section of our Engineering department for the summer of 2024. An intern in this position will work under the direct supervision of a licensed professional engineer. The intern can expect to gain experience working in a transportation construction environment and will be exposed to a variety of construction management and inspection duties.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

An intern in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following essential duties: (These examples do not include all of the duties which the intern may be expected to perform.

  • Assist in the support of construction staff and construction projects.
     
  • Assist with project documentation and monitoring.

    Monitor contractor duties and operations.

    Work closely with management to ensure continuous communication, develop better work efficiency and oversee the constriction process for construction projects.

REQUIREMENTS
 

  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
     
  • Possess a valid Michigan Driver's License.

    Pursuing a degree in Engineering or Construction Management and be an active student returning or enrolling in the fall of 2024.
     

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES
 

  • Ability to communicate effectively with employees, contractors, and the general public.
     
  • Excellent attendance required, dependable transportation, and a good work ethic.

     
  • Physical ability to work in extreme weather conditions and cope with temperature and other environmental extremes in a moving highway work zone.
     
  • Solid understanding of computer software and hardware. Intermediate to advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office and computer-aided design (AutoCAD)
     
  • Familiarity with construction materials and procedures, construction documents a plus.


The work schedule for this position will be Monday - Friday 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Overtime work and weekend work may be required.
