Civil/Structural Engineer Intern

Why will you enjoy this new opportunity?
At Anderson Engineering, we are more than a civil and environmental company. We are an innovation company. We tackle each new assignment with a “What If” mindset, always looking for improved ways of doing things. If you are passionate about using science, math, technology, and creativity to solve engineering problems, you will feel right at home. Working for a big, small company, your ideas and contributions won’t be boxed in and filtered out by the committee. Instead, you will personally help solve big problems in the mining, energy, construction, telecommunication, and land development industries. If you are looking forward to working on unique meaningful projects which keep you engaged and give you ample learning opportunities, then this is the place.
As an Engineer Intern, we aim to ensure you are introduced to many types of impactful engineering problems that will challenge and help you develop your abilities. As a team member, you will be supported by licensed professional engineers who will mentor you and prepare you to become a project leader and professional engineer.

What are the performance goals over the first 6-12 months you will work toward completing?
·        Within 30 days of employment, become competent with Anderson Engineering’s safety operations, deliverable, and drawing standards. In addition, you will work closely with project engineers to provide day-to-day support for structural, environmental, or civil engineering portfolio projects.
·        Within 90 days of employment, you will be implementing engineering knowledge to create calculations and designs for various aspects of a project as directed by the project engineer.
·        Within 180 days of employment, you will review project requirements and put together design packages, including field mapping, calculations, drawings, and reports for small projects.
·        Within 365 days, along with the above, you will be taking on design projects from start to finish with the support of the engineering team.

What type of work will you be doing? What assignments, requirements, or skills will you be performing regularly?
Your regular activities may be modified to suit your professional strengths. Still, on any one day, you might, with the help of your project team:
·        Perform a structural analysis of a communication tower using structural engineering modeling software. Create the model using data from historical drawings, site visits, and LiDAR scan data.
·        Visit a building and use your engineering judgment to determine any problems; take measurements and photos needed to analyze a portion of that building for remodeling.
·        Visit construction sites, answer technical questions, and ensure work is completed according to the safety standards, specifications, and design drawings.
·        Use Solidworks to design and analyze a simple frame that could support antennas on the roof of a building.
·        Use Autocad Civil 3D to create a site plan and roadway for new commercial development.
·        Collect water and soil samples at an old mine site. Follow sample guideline specifications and create maps in GIS to document samples.
·        Perform a soil evaluation in the field and in the lab. Then, design a drainage system or on-site wastewater system based on the determined soil conditions.
·        Follow building code requirements to determine the wind, seismic and dead load on a historic water tower. Then, calculate any necessary reinforcements and create design drawings for those reinforcements.
·        Perform hydrology calculations to determine the size of a detention basin for a mine reclamation project. Then, design the basin and create construction drawings.
·        Create a professional report in Word to effectively detail design assumptions, methods, and decisions made for the analysis of a historical building damaged in an earthquake.
·        Use Excel to create and automate hand calculations for designing a flagpole according to standards.
