Environmental Manager

Hexcel is currently seeking an Environmental Manager for our Salt Lake City, UT, USA location. This highly visible role requires a strong leader, with demonstrated technical knowledge to lead all aspects of environmental culture, compliance and permitting, regulator and agency interactions, sustainability and project-management for manufacturing and research and technology processes within Hexcel’s Salt Lake City, Utah facility.  Candidates must have a proven track record in creating a strong environmental culture, facilitating compliance with environmental regulatory and corporate standards. The position will report into the site leaders and will directly support Hexcel's business expansion activities by coordinating and collaborating with corporate and plant personnel to achieve Hexcel's environmental compliance, environmental and environmental sustainability performance, and Environmental Management Systems (EMS) goals and objectives.

The selected individual will be responsible for but not limited to the following obligations:

  • Leading the strategic development and implementation of SLC’s environmental program to establish a robust culture, prioritize operational compliance with various environmental reporting obligations focused on continuous improvement supporting Hexcel’s systems, procedures, and sustainability initiatives to include decarbonization and waste minimization.
  • Collaborating with corporate and plant leadership to lead environmental permitting and compliance strategies, including the preparation of applications for environmental permits and plans that support current and future site operations.
  • Establishing strong practices and systems, and drive collaboration and best practice sharing across the site by leading continuous improvement activities targeting the reduction and optimization of energy consumption, GHG emissions, water usage and waste minimization through operational leadership and line management, as part of Hexcel’s global sustainability goals and commitments.
  • Working with the site operational teams and environmental staff to ensure air emissions, hazardous waste volumes, wastewater constituent loads and other environmental performance values are calculated and effectively managed.
  • Leading revision and/or implementation of site environmental compliance and management system and associated auditing and ensure adherence to the site’s ISO 14001 certification.
  • Collaborating with and provide support to corporate initiatives/activities, including leading site-specific environmental sustainability data for external reporting (e.g., CDP).
  • Preparing and deliver presentations, communications, and educational/training materials to inform all plant personnel (e.g., leadership; line leaders; operators) about environmental permitting, performance, and compliance status and actions, as necessary.
  • Representing the SLC site and Hexcel in meetings with environmental agencies, local community groups, NGOs and other relevant external stakeholder interactions as needed.
  • Developing strategies and lead negotiations with regulators, including permits and other appropriate activities.
  • Overseeing, mentoring, and guiding junior staff members in the preparation of applications for environmental permits and plans to ensure operational requirements are met.  Supporting the development of the site environmental team, as future environmental leaders for SLC and Hexcel.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental, civil, or chemical engineering or geology or equivalent technical degree required; master's degree and Professional Engineer’s license (or equivalent licenses) is strongly desired.
  • Experience in aspects of environmental compliance (e.g., air, water, waste) assurance and experience leading/supporting complex manufacturing operations.
  • Experience in Title V permitting/compliance and RCRA management.
  • A successful history of positive regulatory agency interactions, with a demonstrated ability to manage/prioritize complex technical projects and their financial elements.
  • Effective leader and mentor, with the ability to lead a team of environmental professionals.
  • Experience or familiarity leading site environmental sustainability programs (e.g., Scopes 1/2 emissions; waste; water consumption), and implementing strategic solutions to reduce carbon emissions, waste and once through water use.
  • Strategic thinker, innovative problem solver, able to lead and influence others in support of key environmental management system goals and site operational priorities.
  • Qualifications and/or experience in transportation and storage of hazardous materials is desired.
