Project Manager I

The Village of Northbrook is seeking a thorough and detail oriented civil engineer for the position of Project Manager I in the Public Works Department. The Village of Northbrook has a robust Capital Improvement Plan which includes annual programs for asphalt and concrete street improvements, water distribution system improvements, sidewalk, stormwater projects, and sanitary sewer improvements. The Project Manager I position designs and oversees a variety of these projects on an annual basis and plays an integral role in managing these projects in the field.  

Reporting to the Assistant Village Engineer, the Project Manager I position will be responsible for the computer based design, inspection, and project management of a variety of civil engineering projects. The Project Manager I position will work indoors and outdoors throughout the year in all weather conditions and will be expected to work occasional nights and weekends during the construction season as required to ensure the successful completion of projects.  

The ideal candidate will have experience with bike and pedestrian transportation projects, design and construction methods for roadways, water main, storm and sanitary sewers, and other civil engineering projects. Essential duties will include engineering design, preparation of bid specifications, preparation of contract documents, management of contractors, construction inspection, and resolving problems related to projects. Other essential duties include performing topographic survey, documenting quantities for payouts, and managing projects to remain within budget. Ideal candidates will be proficient in the use of the Microsoft Office applications, ArcMap/ArcGIS, and AutoCAD/Civil3D to design projects and prepare bid specifications and contract documents for their construction. 

Qualified applicants must possess a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or a closely related field. Experience in municipal infrastructure engineering design and or construction observation is desired. Customer service and the ability to resolve resident and business concerns relating to engineering projects will be key to the success for candidates in this position. Candidates must also possess good written and oral communication skills and have a valid Illinois driver’s license. Starting salary for this non-exempt position is $75,000+/- DOQ. Position will be eligible for up to a 3% increase at 6 and 12 months depending on performance.
