Central Region Construction Engineering Assistant I/II

Position Description:

The position is an entry-level engineer (Engineering Assistant I/II) on a capital construction project, who typically functions as an inspector or office engineer on a project.  This engineer will be responsible for performing field inspection, and/or office computations, analysis of documentation under the supervision of the Project Engineer or a higher level inspector.  As such, he/she must assure that the work is completed in accordance with all plans and specifications.  Using his/her good judgement, the engineer must anticipate and be readily able to adjust to any changing conditions.  This position may also be offered the opportunity to demonstrate the necessary skills to function at a higher-level with more responsibility. 

 

Minimum Qualifications

Engineering Assistant I

Bachelor’s degree (see “Special Note” below), from an institution accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying.

OR

Possession of an Engineer-In-Training (EIT) or Land Surveyor-In-Training (LSIT) certification or verification letter issued by the State of Alaska or the National Council of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors. 

 

Engineering Assistant II

Bachelor’s degree, or the equivalent from an institution accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying;

AND

One year of entry-level engineering, architectural or land surveying experience as an Engineering Assistant I with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.

OR

Five years of progressively responsible sub-professional engineering experience of which two years must be as an Engineering Technician Journey level with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.

 

Substitution: Graduate study in engineering or architecture may be substituted for the required experience. (3 semesters or 4 quarter hours equal one month of experience).

 

Special Note: Engineering Assistant I: An applicant who will obtain within nine months a bachelor’s degree from an institution accredited by ABET, with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying, will qualify to apply.  An applicant qualifying under this option may receive a job offer conditional upon completion of the degree requirement within nine months, and may begin work AFTER obtaining and showing proof of the required degree.
