Product Safety and Compliance Engineer

JOB PURPOSE:

The Product Safety and Compliance Engineer is responsible for leading aspects of product safety and regulatory compliance to all brands for Sandvik's Batteries and Chargers for Hybrid & Electric operated Loaders and Trucks. The ideal candidate will collaborate with product design, marketing, engineering, manufacturing, and sourcing and continuous improvement management to assure the highest quality product designs while maintaining safety and regulatory compliance. The work will be predominantly intellectual and varied, not routine in nature. The employee will need to apply their diverse technical background and strong hazard-based engineering principles to prevent and resolve product compliance or safety-related issues as they arise.

Education Level: 

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering or related four-year degree preferred
  • Master's degree preferred
  • Certification or specialized training in regulatory or product safety evaluation preferred

Job Experience:

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in Engineering, Certification, Compliance, or similar discipline
  • Experience in high voltage battery systems and/or electric vehicle driveline seen as benefit
  • Proven track record for driving continuous improvements and safety initiatives

Skills/Special Training Required to Effectively Perform the Job:

  • Product development and manufacturing activities such as validation and verification procedures
  • Knowledge and application of design of experiments, statistical process control, process capability evaluation, corrective and preventive action processes, FMEA and other risk assessment techniques
  • Ability to understand and interpret regulations and standards (CE, IEC, ISO, EN, etc.)
  • Visionary, aware of external benchmarks and can lead an organization to new levels of quality
  • Background in dealing with regulatory requirements, standards and authorities
  • Analyze issues and define solutions

Responsibilities:

  • Participate in new product development to ensure that developed products comply with the safety requirements in each intended market area
  • Gather and summarize information about safety regulations from market areas
  • Give guidance for engineering to interpret safety regulations and standards, and derive design requirements and constraints from those regulations and standards
  • Lead and document risk assessments, compliance checks, gap analyses and FMEAs
  • Update current products' risk assessments when needed and/or agreed
  • Ensure that safety tasks and related decisions are followed through and documented thoroughly
  • Review manuals to ensure remaining risks are informed in the manuals and that manuals comply with requirements
  • Lead analyses related to functional safety and performed safety function validations
  • Participate in engineering changes to ensure product safety issues are identified and handled
  • Actively monitor industry and regulatory agencies for emerging or changing standards and regulatory requirements with potential for product impact or business risk
  • Analyze global regulations and applicable standards and drive creation of formal External Requirements Plans in support of Research and Development
  • Product safety incident management
  • Invite and lead the incident handling meetings
  • Lead and follow the required actions
  • Ensures the case handling is thoroughly documented
  • Coordinate possible safety recall programs
  • Give input, review and approve the safety bulletins
  • Statistic reports from the safety cases
  • Incident handling process ownership
  • Develop and nurture business relationships with suppliers through proactive communication
