Senior Civil Engineer (CIP Design-Water)

Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) is currently recruiting for multiple experienced CIP Design-Water Civil Engineers with strong design expertise and technical leadership skills, to support the successful project delivery of the Capital Improvement Projects (CIP) of SPU. These positions are crucial in the functioning of the Water Engineering Group, to support the large volume of work within the Water Line of Business at SPU.

Job Responsibilities
  • Prepare technically complex engineering designs for water system capital improvement projects.
  • Prepare reports, technical specifications, estimates, and plans.
  • Prepare schematic, preliminary, final plans of civil features of water utility related design work such as water conveyance pipes, pump stations, valving, cathodic protection, water system appurtenances, site restoration, ADA ramp design, erosion control, etc.
  • Provide engineering services in support of the water system during different project phases (Planning, Option analysis, Design, and Construction phases).
  • Prepare options analysis/preliminary engineering report, design package (plans, specifications, and estimates), and basis of design and basis of estimate documentation.
  • Prepare and stamp design drawings and technical specifications.
  • Provide input to project schedule and Project Management Plans.
  • Conduct site visits to perform internal confined space pipe inspections of large diameter pipelines, perform field investigations and assist in constructability reviews.

Qualifications
Experience: Five (5) years professional civil engineering experience.
Education: A Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering or Civil Engineering Technology. 
Education and Experience Equivalency: Combinations of appropriate education, training, certification, and experience will be evaluated on an individual basis for comparability to the minimum education and experience requirements.
License, Certification and Other Requirements

  • Ability to give clear instructions as well as follow directions.

  • Ability to communicate and work effectively within a multi-cultural workforce serving a diverse customer base.
  • Strong technical skills in Water system design, including pipe systems (transmission and distribution system), valves, storage facilities, pump stations, and cathodic protection etc. 
  • Experience with seismic design using different pipe and fitting materials. This includes design of HDPE pipe, Steel pipe, and ERDIP.
  • Ability to provide design for water main rehabilitation with trenchless technologies such as CIPP, slip-lining and horizontal directional drilling for water mains. 
  • Experience with AutoCAD and Civil3D.
  • Experience with the design of large and complex thrust restraint systems.

Work Environment/Physical Demands
  • Most work is performed in a normal City work/office environment. 
  • Field assignments entail exposure to all types of weather, traffic, hazardous/toxic substances and work in or near construction sites. 
  • May be required to stand, walk, or bend for extended periods of time. 
Workplace Environment (*Telework Expectation):    
This position allows for the flexibility of a hybrid work schedule. Employees will be required to come into the office twice a week. Individual schedules will be agreed upon by the employee and their supervisor.
 
The full salary range for this position is $57.96 - $67.49 per hour
