Electro Optical (EO), Visible and Infrared (IR) Systems Engineer

The selected candidate will be a member of a small SDL team and will work alongside the government and contractor teams on-site at the Missile Defense Agency (MDA), at vendor locations in Huntsville, Alabama, and be able to support vendors at locations in the US. As a sensor technical advisor to the Government team and an individual who will be asked to assess and provide data-driven recommendations supporting the Government’s oversight of vendor team design efforts, this individual must possess the experience, maturity, and knowledge to interact with other junior and senior professionals in a collaborative and team-focused manner.
Required Qualifications:
  • Masters in mechanical engineering, physics, applied physics, electrical engineering or optical engineering related to remote sensing system test and calibration, plus 5 years of experience with EO sensor systems
  • Working knowledge of state-of-the-market hardware and software capabilities used in missile defense systems
  • Detailed understanding of EO/IR sensor systems, and the ability to analyze vendor or industry designs and identify advantages or disadvantages of a proposed design
  • Experience analyzing the performance or EO/IR sensor systems, including experience using the types of tools needed to accomplish that type of work (e.g. MATLAB, Python, FRED, Zemax, etc.)
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, initiative-driven environment to quickly prioritize and execute technical tasks
  • Knowledge of systems engineering techniques and their application to large DoD development programs
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with program management, customers, contractors, and colleagues
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with customers
  • Must be a US citizen and have an active DoD Secret security clearance and ability to obtain a DoD TS/SCI security clearance
  • Must be able to travel occasionally to contractor and customer facilities
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Recent experience in Ballistic Missile Defense System programs or technologies
  • Detailed knowledge of Missile Defense Programs; experience with Ground-based Midcourse Defense (GMD) is very desirable
  • Ability to analyze data quickly and provide modeling and research resources that support position is very desirable.
  • Experience with handling, classified, CUI, and competition-sensitive information appropriately.
