Bridge Unit Design Engineer - Transportation Engineer 9-P11/12

Are you interested in learning how to design bridges and structures across the entire state for MDOT? Our team is responsible for preparing the design to construct and/or rehabilitate a variety of bridge types on MDOT roadways.
 
As a design engineer, you will work with a team of project managers, technicians, and other design engineers to compile engineering drawings, specifications, and cost estimates for construction projects all around the state. You will have the opportunity to see our work become reality and aid in construction questions and submittals as the project is built.
 
As the next Bridge Design Engineer, you will be responsible for:
 
  • Field visits and inspection of bridges throughout the state of Michigan to verify scope of work and project cost.
  • Utilizing spreadsheets and other programs to calculate and organize project quantities to be placed on bridge contract plans.
  • Designing and preparing preliminary details for bridge rehabilitation and reconstruction projects to be utilized by a CAD technician to prepare detailed drawings for bridges.
  • Preparing complete design and checking final plan details for contract plans for bridges.
  • Participating in project meetings and discussing/making recommendations regarding design details and constructability of bridge rehabilitation/reconstruction projects.
  • Conducting final QA/QC for the plans and proposal material for bridge contracts.

The "Salary" listed above is a range that reflects the minimum rate at the entry (9) level through the maximum rate at the advanced (12) level. Based on education and experience, candidates will be reviewed to determine what level they are qualified for.

Required Education and Experience
Education
Possession of a bachelor of science degree in engineering OR will obtain by May 31, 2023.
Experience

Transportation Engineer 9
No specific type or amount is required.

Transportation Engineer 10
One year of professional engineering experience involved in transportation systems and programs equivalent to a Transportation Engineer 9.

Transportation Engineer P11
Two years of professional engineering experience involved in transportation systems and programs equivalent to a Transportation Engineer, including one year equivalent to a Transportation Engineer 10.

Transportation Engineer 12
Three years of professional engineering experience involved in transportation systems and programs equivalent to a Transportation Engineer, including one year equivalent to
a Transportation Engineer P11.
Alternate Education and Experience
Transportation Engineer 9 - 12

Possession of a registered professional engineer license as required by the State of Michigan may be substituted for 6 months of experience at the Transportation Engineer 9-12 levels. This substitution may only be used once for any employee for qualification of appointment or early reclassification.
Additional Requirements and Information
Possession of a valid driver's license is required.
