Automation and Controls Engineer, Launch Program

Job Summary
Kairos Power’s Launch Program is a 18-month training program that offers early career professionals hands-on learning opportunities. During the program, you will partner with a Launch mentor who will teach you various internal processes and methods through direct and practical projects. This program accelerates the learning process by offering increased exposure to various teams and projects enabling your potential to be a well-rounded engineer. The program intends to start at end of June 2023.
Kairos Power is seeking a highly motivated Automation and Controls Engineer with a hands-on approach to design, assembly, and testing of control systems for complex thermal/fluids experiments. In this role, you will contribute to the operation of test facilities for development of the Kairos Power Fluoride Salt-Cooled High Temperature Reactor (KP-FHR).
Responsibilities
  • Building an understanding of Kairos Power’s existing and planned test facility instrumentation and control hardware and software.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot test facility bugs and malfunctions.
  • Building and expanding on automation functions for the Kairos power test facilities.
  • Document and communicate instrumentation and control issues and resolutions.
  • Work with Kairos Power test engineers to run simulant fluid thermal hydraulics experiments, molten salt-based materials experiments, and plant simulator experiments.
  • Design and implement automation control algorithms and data communications on existing systems.
  • Act as a liaison between the instrumentation and control and testing teams.
  • Other duties as assigned.
 Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineer, Mechanical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering or similar discipline with strong background in automation and control systems.
  • Previous industry internships and/or research laboratory experience preferred.
  • Experience with control system software (LabVIEW, PLCs, etc.)
  • Ability to review, interpret, and understand Piping and Instrument Diagrams (P&IDs) and electrical single line diagrams, ladder logic and structured text programming language is preferred.
  • Experience working in a laboratory or industrial environment on thermal/fluids testing is desirable, along with experience using associated laboratory equipment and hand tools.
  • Experience and coursework in areas such as: statistics, dynamics, fluid dynamics, heat transfer, electrical/electronic control theory. 
  • Experience with control system analysis and design and OPC UA communication.
  • Proven team player with excellent verbal, written communication/presentation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work with highly collaborative team and proven team player working with various teams
  • Ability to solve problems quickly and efficiently
  • Prioritizes and ensures safety of oneself and others
  • Ability to proactively collect, manage and transfer knowledge
  • Ability to seek different and novel ways to create efficiencies when working on problems, challenges and issues
Physical Conditions 
  • Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, scissor lifts, and articulated boom lifts
  • Setting up and transferring temporary structures (e.g. scaffolding, ladders)
  • Moving self in different positions to accomplish tasks in various environments including tight and confined spaces
  • Remaining in a stationary position, often standing, or sitting for prolonged periods
  • Moving about to accomplish tasks or moving from one worksite to another
  • Adjusting, moving, transporting, installing, positioning, or removing objects up to 25 pounds in all directions
  • Communicating with others to exchange information
  • Use hand tools
  • Repetitive assembly operations of manufacturing test fixtures and test setups in collaboration with engineering and manufacturing teams

  • May occasionally require extended hours to support launch and critical project timelines
The salary range for this position is $71,400-$85,000 for employees working onsite at our Alameda, CA headquarters. The range provided in this job posting represents the typical range or starting rate of candidates hired in California. Factors that may be used to determine your actual salary may include your education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities, the market data for your work location, and a comparison to other employees already in the role.
