Electrical Engineer Intern

At Trane TechnologiesTM and through our businesses including Trane® and Thermo King®, we create innovative climate solutions for buildings, homes, and transportation that challenge what’s possible for a sustainable world. We're a team that dares to look at the world's challenges and see impactful possibilities. We believe in a better future when we uplift others and enable our people to thrive at work and at home. We boldly go.
Job Summary:
Are you an ambitious and innovative Electrical Engineering student looking to jump-start your career? Our Electrical Engineering Intern will have the opportunity to work alongside our team of experts to support Thermo King’s Auxiliary Power Unit product line.
Thermo King's Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) product line provides a solution to the need for drivers to stay comfortable and productive on the road while also reducing idling and fuel consumption. An APU is a small diesel engine that provides power to heat or cool the cab and operate electrical equipment, like laptops and refrigerators, while the main engine is turned off. This results in fuel savings, reduced emissions, and improved driver comfort.
At Thermo King, we're at the forefront of the trucking industry's electrification shift, offering electrified solutions such as battery-electric APUs that provide power to the cab and equipment without the need for a combustion engine. As an Electrical Engineering Intern, you'll have the opportunity to work on developing and improving these electrified solutions, as well as diesel-powered APUs. You'll collaborate with a team of experts to apply engineering principles and technical rigor to develop innovative design ideas that focus on electrification, connectivity, user experience, and improved system efficiencies and reliability.
In this role, you'll also troubleshoot and improve the reliability of electrical and electromechanical systems, coordinate with other teams to drive project success, and gain valuable hands-on experience in testing and project management. With Thermo King, you'll make a real impact on our products and the transport industry as a whole.
Core Job Responsibilities (others may be added):
  • Drive new product solutions:
  • Work with internal and external resources to build a strong understanding of transport industry trends and APU applications.
  • Bring your creativity and enthusiasm to develop new and innovative design ideas focused on electrification, connectivity, user-experience, and improved system efficiencies and reliability.
  • Empower product reliability:
  • Join our team to troubleshoot electrical and electromechanical reliability issues.
  • Bring your unique perspective to identify failure modes, develop solutions, and validate design improvements through testing.
  • Unleash your cross-functional coordination skills: Coordinate cross-functionally with product management, test, software, modeling & simulation, field personnel, manufacturing, and suppliers to drive success.
  • Make a difference with test series:
  • Assist in developing and executing test plans (component and system level) for reliability, durability, performance, and safety.
  • Implement design changes:
  • Conduct technical designs reviews and communicate design changes with engineering drawings, specification changes, and bill of material changes.
  • Take charge of small-scale projects:
  • Drive project execution and plan and coordinate timely integration of corrective actions.
  • Communicate project status as needed.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Ambitious and innovative Electrical Engineering student currently pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering.
  • Undergraduate student in their sophomore, or junior year.
  • Knowledge of electrical systems, components, and power electronics is preferred.
  • GPA greater than 3.0
  • Ability to work 40 hour weeks during summer break; desirable to work up to 15 hours per week during the school year
  • U.S. citizen or have the legal right to work in the U.S. without requiring sponsorship now or in the future
Key Competencies:
  • An infectious positive attitude and willingness to learn and work collaboratively with a team of engineers.
  • Ability to use electrical tools and instrumentation to perform testing and gather data.
  • A strong attention to detail and ability to troubleshoot electrical, software, and control systems.
