Assay Development Expert/Consultant, HP Labs

The Microfluidics and System Technology* at HP Laboratories in Palo Alto, California, is seeking a scientist with an industry track record to provide deep technical guidance in the development of molecular diagnostics assays. This role will involve working closely with an elite multidisciplinary R&D team working on breakthrough technologies in the life sciences.
The ideal candidate will have expertise and knowledge in several of the following areas:
  • Principles of nucleic acid extraction, capture, hybridization, and washing / purification
  • Sample preparation of difficult and diverse matrices (blood, urine, nasal, oral, etc.)
  • In-depth understanding of the formulations of buffers for sample preparation and the role of pH, ionic strength, surfactants, blocking agents, reducing agents, etc.
  • Methods to reduce or prevent nonspecific interactions amongst nucleic acids, proteins, and other biological macromolecules
  • Surface and colloidal chemistry, especially as relates to aqueous systems
  • Organic and inorganic chemistry, biochemistry, physical chemistry
  • Techniques of analytical chemistry, such as FTIR, spectrophotometry, fluorescent labeling, etc.
  • Principles of protein purification, such as affinity and ion-exchange chromatography and salting out
  • Infectious diseases and molecular biology techniques, including technologies for amplification of specific gene sequences
  • Communication, organization and data analysis skills
  • More than 30 years of relevant experience
