Process Safety Engineer

Day to Day Role:

  • Follow and commit to meet Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s) for safety, quality, production, efficiency, and service requirements.
  • Follow practices and processes intended to provide safe products that comply with appropriate laws and regulations, meet the company quality standards
  • Follow and commit to safety and GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices)
  • Manage, prioritize, and complete projects or programs of moderate size, scope, and duration
  • Coordinate project work with other engineers, technicians, designers and/or or drafters
  • Ensure site compliance with OSHA PSM and EPA RMP requirements
  • Develop, implement, and maintain internal management systems, procedures and process improvements and reporting metrics needed to demonstrate continuous PSM/RMP compliance
  • Routinely audit all PSM elements to ensure compliance with process hazard analysis (PHA) requirements
  • Facilitate initial and revalidation PHA’s, issue PHA reports and monitor/document resolution of corrective actions
  • Coordinate, develop and/or maintain process safety information and other required PSM/RMP documentation which includes design reviews, process hazard analysis, standard operating procedures, and contractor safety documentation
  • Assist in development, execution, and documentation of PSM related material for new employees and refresher training
  • Lead pre-start up safety reviews for new equipment and assist in new equipment selection
  • Analyze overall processes for potential hazards, verify materials and equipment used meets standards, verify equipment maintenance procedures and schedules are properly defined, and establish reporting processes.
  • Coordinate internal compliance checks, participate in third-party compliance audits and monitor implementation of corrective action
  • Help as needed with air, wastewater, storm water, residual waste and hazmat permits and reporting
  • Lead, facilitate or participate in site incident investigations to determine root cause of incidents, especially those that are considered PSM in nature.
  • Provides incident investigation training.
  • Work with Process Engineering to manage, maintain and improve chemical processes and mitigate risk for the plant
  • Identify broad conceptual ideas and develop them into useful solutions
  • Establish continuous improvement plans where efficiency, quality, safety, or service can be improved
 

Core Skills and Qualifications

Candidate must have one of the following:
  • Bachelor’s degree with an emphasis in engineering, safety & environmental management, or related field of study. An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
Candidate must have all of the following:
  • Knowledge of environmental issues, safety, and code compliance
  • Use logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems
  • Ability to successfully prioritize, and organize projects, deadlines, and tasks with little supervision in both team and independent environments
  • Strong verbal and written skills necessary to communicate intricate job-related information
  • Demonstration of minimum proficiency with the English language to ensure effective new hire training and on-going communications about safety and quality issues
Preferred Skills: 
  • Two (2) years or related engineering experience
  • One (1) year of direct involvement with PSM (40 CFR 1910.119) or risk management (Clean Air Act Section 112) programs required
  • Working knowledge of energy and material balance fundamentals, process flow sheets, piping and instrument diagrams (P&ID), OSHA PSM, and EPA RMP requirements
  • Experience in process or EHS engineering roles within the chemical process industry
  • Two (2) years of experience managing a PSM and/or RMP program
